By the way, as a trivia note to all: "Jackson" may have ben on a list of approved names, but I have never seen any reference from WW2 or up to the later part of the 20th Century that uses that name. It was always an "M36".

The packs, etc over the stars were quite common, or else the crews would paint them over or daub mud on them. Many crewmen in tanks etc felt the stars made an aiming point for the Germans. Gary B. Waverly, NE

One thing in your favor - the original gun's trails pivoted at a central point, unlike artillery like the US 105mm howitzer where each trail is hinged off the axle. That means that one central pivot COULD allow for folding trails. For towing the "official" towing vehicle for a US Army...

The K&C turret is correct for some M4A3E8s from the earlier production batches. The turrets came from several foundries so there was production overlap between foundries and tank assembly plants. As you mentioned the first batch of M4A3E8s got to the ETO right before the Ardennes offensive...
