Any tips appreciated gents. If touching up spots of chipped or flaking paint on a metal figure, is it always best to dab on primer first or just paint it onto metal , then varnish it afterwards ? Can varnish be used as the primer ( I read that somewhere )? I will be using brushes and acrylic...

Luckily it is a very limited problem in my experience. A couple of tiny spots missing from the caps of Afrika Korps figures ( which I can live with as they are tiny) but primarily the question was raised as I was able to order from treefrog's "consignment " section the rare tropical camo...
...as it is bare metal showing through, would it be ok to just paint straight onto it, or is it crucial to prime to area in some way first ? As it is just millimetres is there any point to prime first ? ( hopefully not...)
