    WW 1 Battalion numbering

    During my reading in particular regarding WW 1 I often come across reference to a battalion with two numbers such as 1/9th Royal Scots. Obivously the 9th Battalion but what does the 1 represent ? A reserve battalion,a Territorial battalion or something else ? Any comments appreciated. Thanks K
