LVTs saw extensive use in the Pacific campaign with additional use in the ETO.
Some times these vehicles were called Buffalos but the orignal nick name for them was Alligator. What is the probable reason these vehicles were nick named Alligators?

They were originally designed for swamp rescues.
 
Wow, that was quick. You're correct Louis. Roebling, at the suggestion of his father, designed the first Alligator in 1935 to be used as a rescue vehicle in the Okeechobee region of the Florida everglades after noticing the loss of life in the area due to the various hurricanes that plagued the area. It was "designed to bridge the gap between where a boat ran aground and a car flooded out."

I researched the history of the Amtrak while writing my first novel a few months ago, so the information was still fresh in my head.
