Although my birthday was on January 16th, I just received an unexpected gift from Bob Walker yesterday. My son had planned to take me out to dinner at Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant in Costa Mesa on the 14th, unfortunately, he had a serious mountain biking accident on the 7th and had to cancel (this will make sense in a moment). He had a complete break of the two bones in his forearm which protruded through the skin in his arm. He also broke his nose and index finger. The hospital emergency room doctor said that he may not have survived the accident had he not been wearing a helmet which had cracked on impact. Instead, on the 16th, my wife and I drove the 40 miles to his house in Laguna Niguel to pick him up (he couldn't drive) so he could join us at the Ruth Chris Steakhouse in Anaheim for dinner. At dinner, he insisted we reschedule the Maggiano's dinner for the 21st.
I walked into Maggiano's on the 21st expecting to see my son, his wife, and my granddaughter. Instead, they had a surprise party for me with my three brothers (two of whom had flown in for the event), my sister, their spouses, nieces, nephews, and my friend, Bob Walker. What a pleasant surprise. I received an "Old Guys Rule" T-shirt, a book on UCLA's top 100 basketball games, wine, etc. as gifts. Bob had ordered a gift for me which hadn't arrived by the 21st. It is three King & Country French Napoleonic figures, photos attached. However, the best gift of all is that my son survived that accident.
