Giant all day long sham battle played between 3 friends and myself. Simple fast play rules. 2 charts with ratings and values for all the various troops types and trolls ect., one good , one evil.
Initiative passes back and forth by the roll of the die. Objectives were simple. Forces of Evil{ Mordor, Isengard, Morgul} destroy the forces of man. Gondor and Rohan, survive.
16' x 6' table. Good forces deployed left to right, in the ruined city , in defensive positions along the ridgeline and on the right in a little kidney shaped hill with some ruined alters.
Full on frontal assault by the evil forces on the left into the city ruins and in the center. The right was a bit more interesting as they tried to take the kidney shaped hill and turn the flank, only to have their flank turned and driven in by Knights.In the end, the ruins was still a Stalingrad type fight in the ruins with no one gaining clear advantage. The center,and handful of Rohan and Gondor survivors { perhaps 60} held a small defensive position.To their right on the ridge the Knights of Minus Tirith and another 60 weary foot soldiers held a position eyeballing the evil forces that had been repulsed and now milled about across the valley reforming.Still plenty to attempt another assault.
The Rohan cavalry { 200} appeared on the field to the right of the city, broke through 8 units of Mordor Orcs, turned right and into the rear of the mass of Urak hai advancing in the center to destroy the surviving foot soldiers of Rohan and Gondor . The survivors had formed shield walls behind there defensive positions in a last stand.The evil forces had been checked on both flanks and their center had it's right flank turned, with horse archers gleefully riding unopposed behind them and quit there advance for the kill in the center.They turned and tried to deal with the cavalry but it was looking like a massacre and route. We called the game there.
2500 figures. 10 hour marathon war game. Fun had by all but it was an exhausting good day.
I linked to my face book page rather than resize all the pix. Never mind all the cat pix my friends keep posting there!

Man, love those riders of Rohan.

Yes they are very cool troops. I spent half the Winter painting them { and other good guys} for this battle. Kind of anti climactic, they entered the field , crushed all before them, and we quit.
Too old and tired to stand around a table pushing little guys around for 10 hours!

Fantasy figures are not my thing... but I have to admit those are very well-painted and the presentation is on a grand scale...!

Thanks for posting these pics, Fubar! {bravo}}

Thank you. Fantasy figures LOTR are simply a lot of fun to paint. A break from Historical where every detail has to be accurate and precise. No stitch counters to tell you your Orc or troll has the wrong color piping on his collar.
I don't collect other Fantasy other than a large Skeleton army complete with skeleton war Mammoths ect.I did most of these years ago when my kids were 8- 10. Again, for a painter, they are simply a pleasure.

Fantastic, very well painted figures. Your battle was assume. I love epic battles. I just sent you a friend request on facebook, check out my Battle of Minas Tirith. I also had about 3800 figures on the table and a Minas Tirith that I custom made out of extruded foam.

cheers,
Tom
