While watching the WWII documentary by George Stevens (famous director who headed up a US Army film crew) D Day To Berlin, I noticed an M-3 tank in a convoy with M-4s moving thru France. It had the 75mm gun but the 37 had been removed. I can find no reference for these tanks serving in France but there it was. Do any of our Forum tank experts know anything about this? Thanks

Hi,
I believe some M3/Gant tanks, with the37mm turret removed, were use in Europe as ARVs. It is well outside my main eras of interest but for some reason I can remember this. I suspect someone will be able post images of this vehicle.

That's correct and described in the article Wayne linked to. But the tank I saw had the 75mm gun and no crane used for recovery ops. Very puzzling. Best I can think is some unit held onto their M-3 for sentimental reasons.

Just checked that video, that Lee Recovery tank (M31) is following an M4 with Dozer blade, the M31 def had a jib at the back, bit hard to see as it was not raised.

Thanks Matt, I missed the rig on the back of the tank. Makes sense.
