Oh Ok, gotcha; they're not cheating the system by paying the gross national product of Venezuela in salaries, they just found a loophole in the system in order to do it.

So the Yankees and Red Sox paid out the ass for luxury tax because they weren't smart enough to find the loophole like the Wyle E Coyote Super Genius Dodgers did.

Got it, makes perfect sense, why pay a luxury tax like other teams do when you can get around it by using a loophole that no other teams were smart enough to figure out.

No wonder why they're the champs.
I don’t think you’re getting it. Even though LA only pays $2 million per year for 10 years, with the rest deferred, when it comes to the luxury tax, they are being assessed $46 million per year, not $2 million.

Secondly, other teams do deferred comp deals and it’s expressly permitted by the CBA.

Clearly I have no clue how salaries/taxes/etc, etc, work in professional sports.

Baseball and all sports need a hard cap, you can't spend over X amount, you have to spend UP TO X amount, but the players will never go for it, who can blame them; 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 million a year and beyond in salary clearly is not enough for these poor guys, how can you expect someone to live off of "only" say 10 million a year to hit or throw a baseball, shoot a basketball, shoot or stop a hockey puck or run with, throw or tackle a guy with a football.

I've said all I'm going to say on the matter as the whole process is easier to understand that splitting an atom, so I'm done talking about something I do not fully understand.

All of this just makes me care less and less about professional sports as I get older, not to mention this year has been very trying for me on a couple of personal levels as well as on a business level, the entire thing is laughable.

I understand your perspective but on one level why do fans care so much about how much a player gets paid as, after as all, it’s not our money (although ticket prices, concessions, etc. are always going up). Sports is an entertainment business and non-sports entertainers make a lot of money, probably more than athletes.

As someone who pays taxes in California I can tell you that this is more than exploiting a “loophole”

Ohtani‘s 10 year $700mil contract is structured to defer $68 million dollars annually, he “only” gets $2mil per year under the deferment thus avoiding over $100mil in state taxes.

Huge cheers for the him and the Dodgers, except when it comes to Cali residents having to pay extra taxes to make up for his use of an innocent “loophole”.

Which is why I call bullshit to what the Dodgers are doing with salaries.

I still plan on waking up about 3 days from now and seeing overnight news of “Dodgers land Soto,10 years 625 mill, 624 mill deferred”.............

Again, I call bullshit to the whole thing, complete nonsense.

“I call bullshit”. What does that even mean.

The job of tax specialists is to find loopholes in the Code. That’s what they’re supposed to do. If you don’t like it, change the law. It’s as simple as that.

Red Sox have reportedly made a 13 year offer $625 million to Soto.

A good friend of mine from a Boston based sports message board laid all of this out to me in layman's terms as again, it's as clear as mud to me.

The Dodgers with their endless supply of money have a competitive advantage in being on the hook for that money later vs now, something a lot of teams might not have the financial stability to stomach, ie, owing $68million a year from 2034-43, for past performance. They will also have to pay an entire roster's worth of guys to play in 2034 and beyond in addition to the money they will owe him.

And yes, anyone can do it, but I'd guess a lot of teams would be pretty uncomfortable with the prospect of being on the hook down the road, but hey, the Dodgers are going to Dodger, the Yankees will Yankee and the Mets will Met.

Any owner thinking of selling someday would/should be wary of this if he has more than a two ounce brain.

He then reminded me of the Bonilla thing where the Mets are on the hook to him until the end of time.

Leave it to the Mets to be the kings of this.

He also said (and I agree) that's where he thinks he'll end up, on the Mets.

The Red Sox offer won't get it done in his opinion, I guess we'll see.

Why the offer was floated is beyond me; oh right, that POS Boras wants to start a bidding war, silly me.

Red Sox have reportedly made a 13 year offer $625 million to Soto.
Reports are the Yankees top offer is 550 million, it's down to the RS and the Mets.

Soto has stated he wants the largest contract in MLB history and since the RS offer is already out there, my prediction is he goes to the Mets, 13/650.

I don’t believe that’s the Yankees top offer. Hal knows it’s going to take more than that. They are the team that can least afford to lose him because if they don’t re-sign him, they will have nothing to show for the trade. If the RS, Blue Jays or Mets don’t sign him there will be some initial fan criticism but it will be longer lasting with the Yankees.

I hope the RS do not sign him, paying him a fortune (deferred or not) will leave next to nothing to address their biggest need, pitching, their starters went a combined 44-51 last year and the team finished 81-81, they have plenty of offense, plus some great blue chip talent in the minors (and yeah I get it, not proven MLB talent and nothing is guaranteed minor league success will translate to MLB).

Spend money on starting pitching/bullpen help and let the kids develop and see where things go.

Soto is one guy, granted a generational talent, but the Phillies got Harper and have won exactly zero WS titles.

No thanks, not my money and all that, but it's too much to devote to one player (deferred or not).

Reports are that the Dodgers are at $900 million on Soto: 15 years @ $10mil, $750mil deferred at $10mil/yr over 75 years, Soto will be on their payroll until he's 101.

They have the goal of becoming the largest retirement fund in America.

With the way rumors are flying about this team or that team or this amount of money, no one really knows the truth. It’s all speculation.

It's insanity the numbers being thrown around; this isn't basketball where one player puts you over the top, I'd much rather see the RS sign/trade for front line starters and shore up the bullpen, they went 81-81 last year with no real ace and a terrible bullpen, they blew game after game, Soto won't help in either of those areas.

I read an article where Soto is quoted as saying "I'd love to sign with Boston, they were the team I rooted for growing up; as long as they offer me the most money."

I saw another tweet from a NY based source; "If it is down to the Mets or the Red Sox, I can see why he'd prefer the Mets over the Red Sox, look at all the success the Mets have had vs the Red Sox the past 20 or so.............oh nevermind."

Those NY guys really can't stand each other I guess.

For the billionth time; yeah, I get it, it's all about the money, but I'd also think signing somewhere where you really want to play would factor in too, there are certain destinations I can't imagine players wanting to go to.

Manny Ramirez from all reports never liked it here in Boston, he claims his agent forced him to sign the deal as it was the highest offer, he preferred to stay in Cleveland.

If it were me, the highest offer would not be the deciding factor, 700 million dollars vs 710 or whatever?

Really; 10 million at that stage will sway someone?

Whatever.

Soto's contract will be an anchor around the neck of any team that signs him. He's not a franchise changing player. I'm hoping that he goes anywhere other than the Dodgers.

To me, he’s just a mercenary. I know that to a certain extent they all are but he seems more rapacious than most. I’m not a huge fan. I might have mentioned this before but after the WS was over and they asked him about his impending free agency, instead of saying something like “this is not the time to talk about that,” he said something like I’m open to any team. Obviously if he chooses the Mets, great, but if not, it won’t be the end of the world.

Agreed, a complete mercenary who's literally chasing the last dollar, I really don't want him, I'd rather they spend the money on two front line starters and a couple of bullpen pieces.

The line up is fine, maybe add a right handed bat, but pitching is the issue IMO.

Latest is the Mets have the highest offer 15/730 million...........so 48 million or so a year for 15 years, when he'll be 41.

To me the money has really gotten out of hand. When I was younger they said the players were underpaid and I agreed as the owners really was raking in the money. Now it has flipped flopped and gotten way out of hand. Smaller area teams just can't compete with the NY and LA teams. Welcome to the up side down world.
