What is the oldest monument in Paris somehow indirectly linked to Napoléon?

Can you clarify the criteria?
Thanks,
Sandor

Wow you are fast, I just pushed the submit button :smile2: By oldest I mean when this monument was built or more exactly made...:wink2: It has a relation to Napoléon too. Yes, it's a tricky question. Bonne chance !

Not le Pont des Arts, 1801? Probablt not, but it is the oldest on Napoleon.org.

Yes, that's the one but what is the link with Napoléon? :wink2:

Muhammad Ali , the ruler of Egypt that gifted the obelisk, was second in command of the force that reoccupied Egypt after Napoleon's departure?

Or was it Josephine's request to Napoleon to bring back and obelisk?

No and no :wink2: Again think what could link Napoléon to the obelisk (there were actually 2 given to France by Mehmet Ali in 1830, way after Napoléon died btw).

Did not Napoleon erect a statue of an elephant in the Place de la Concorde which fell into disrepair and was replaced by the obelisk? Trooper

When Napoleon's army first sighted the Temple at Luxor, they spontaneously presented arms.

No, the elephant was Place de la Bastille not Place de la Concorde :wink2:

Nope, I give you guys 2 more days before giving the answer (IOW the missing link) :wink2:

As promised here is the complete answer:

The obelisk of the Place de la Concorde in Paris was made in Egypt, 3300 years ago when Paris didn't even exist! Therefore this is the oldest monument in Paris.

The link with Napoléon is Champollion who decyphered the hieroglyphs using the Rosetta stone discovered by one of Napoleon's soldiers during the Egyptian campaign. Champollion also is the one who picked the 2 obelisks (interestingly enough the second one which stayed in Egypt was officially given back to that country by the late French President Francois Mitterand in 1981!).

So without Napoleon campaigning to Egypt, the Rosetta stone wouldn't been discovered which would have not triggered Champollion's interest in Egypt and its hieroglyphs. And its likely that Mehmet Ali would have not given the 2 obelisks to France as a gift given that nothing would have linked Egypt to France by then.

Voila !
