Following on from Harrie's suggestion for a new thread on Tarawa Dioramas.
Here's my progress.
I managed to find time to do the Seawall which in the end I've stuck to some hardboard with hot glue, but I need to tidy it up some, trimming down the board so that it's not noticeable as it is at present and cut off the excess glue.

Also after watching that Tarawa footage I saw that the sand I was using was far too dark for the dry sand there, the wet appearance at the tideline I think is ok still. Fortunately I had enough light colour sand to redo.
My tideline I think I will tidy up a bit trimming a few bits off and add some barbed wire there, most of posts will probably have been smashed and torn down by the Amtracs driving over them.

Still need to work on bunker though I may go with the one I've got but just add some sloping sides etc.
Need to get some more dowelling for trenches, also make a couple of dozen or so sandbags, I was thinking of either ones made from milliput or air drying clay.

For empty cartridge cases to scatter by the firing Marines I'm thinking of either some Brass rod, cut it to length, which sounds like it's going to be a tedious job so I may only do a few ! But I'll need to get the diameter right or maybe just paint some wire brass and cut to length.

Certainly need some more Marines to take up positions on the beach. Hopefully K&C will release some more in December !

Some photos.

Hi Steve,

your progress is very clear! I've appreciated every detail. I love, especially, your use of the sand!:rolleyes: You can notice lots of marine debris and other stuff!! Terrific shots... That's great job from each observation point! Once again, I have to say, well done!!

Cheers

Certainly a project of love Steve. You would have to be happy with what you have accomplished so far. Robin.

Cheers Robin. Good of you to say so !{sm4}

So many details to admire. The palm tree hugging the ground, the log wall, and the water breaking on the beach to mention a few. Your dio, and Harris's, are fantastic. Chris

That will be decided for me by what goodies TG and K&C release in the coming weeks as my wallet can only open so far with Christmas coming up fast as well.

Whilst looking for info on Japanese bunkers on Betio, Tarawa Atoll found this.

http://www.lonesentry.com/articles/jp-betio-island/

Ha, so what I had been thinking and calling a Seawall, turns out to have been part of the Japanese defences, a barricade with firing pits behind with slits cut out of the logs !

Makes an interesting read and will help those building a diorama, I'll be adding one or two things to mine. Who knows,some of things talked about Andy may finds peeks his interest enough into adding on to his ideas list !

Steve

Looks good Harrie !
I'm impressed with your painting effect there.
What did you use in the end to make your Sea ?

Steve

The sea is becoming a work of art. The way it is going, you will have to pack the lot off to a museum.:salute:: Robin.

Gotta' agree with Robin and Steve, your "sea" is looking like a masterpiece.
Maybe you mentioned, in a previous thread ... but who makes the Sherman Tank?
Is it a BMC or a kit?

Everything is coming together so wonderfully,as Robin said, .... OFF TO A MUSEUM. {sm3}
