When Scott mentioned specially commissioned sets after I posted pictures of my final, official Trophy AZW set (ZS55) I thought “What a great idea for a new thread”, thanks for sowing the seed Scott:salute::

The story starts back in ’91 when I commissioned Len to produce some special AZW sets for me, here is the first of several that I will feature over the next few days/weeks!!!!!!!

Martyn,
I look forward to seeing your upcoming posts.

Martyn,

These are very nice, (due to being higorant ^&grin ) what is special? Is it just the paint job or configuration of figures or have they been sculpted to your specifications?

I am assuming (hoping) that this may be a loooooong thread! {sm3}

Hi Jeff

Many thanks for your question :salute::

The commissioned sets, in the main, were based on standard sets painted to represent different British Regiments that fought in the Zulu War but not available to order from the Trophy catalogue. There were certain sets such as the Field Hospital (M.A.S.H) set and the Gatling Gun which were offered with the option of 24th or 60th Rifles and the 91st Highlanders also made an appearance in the 1980's but disappeared from the catalogue almost immediately. The 60th and 91st were high on my list, along with several other Regiments:wink2:

The Naval Brigade set I pictured have figures from the Boer War series but with subtle differences such as the size of the shell, in the original set this would have been for the Naval 4.7 gun which would obviously have been far too big for the 9pdr, it was changed

I have quite a few sets to get through so it could last a while^&grin

Martyn: How timely of you to order and receive special commissions while Len was still in business. These are really nice sets.

My other Anglo Zulu War Gatling gun is manned by the 24th and is not a special commission, hence no picture in this thread

Ooooh! The one in the middle is the one Len used for the marching sailors in the Boxer series, with a grey base, of course!
