Really like the new heer troops,
Think the poses are original and interesting, and definetly add something new to the german line-up.
Like the caps as a change instead of the helmets,
As regards the splinter cammo , could someone give us a quick background on when this was used etc:)

I don't collect the Heer figures or WW2 for that matter...but ...they would be my favorite considering they were the back bone of the German forces.

It was used throughout the war really. Not sure of exact dates. Some of the German paras on Crete wore the luftwaffe version of splinter. So it's a least around in 1941.
There were a couple of A and B variants and also a version called tan and water or marsh pattern. This came later in the war. The new figures look like they are wearing tan and water splinter.

Canadian Samurai will give you guys a much better explanation than I can but in the mean time here is a link with a brief description:

The base color of splinter varied from tan through grey and greyish green. The main polygon color was brown with smaller green polygons. The brown and green polygons always touched each other, in other words none were isolated on the background.

Luftwaffe Splinter '41 was simlar to the Heer type other than the polygons were smaller.

Marsh '43 was the first attempt to dither or soften the edges of the polygons. This was done through the use of small dots. With this variant there is a distinctive border between the solid color, dithered area and background. Another important change is green became the main polygon color with brown appearing in smaller patches.

Marsh '44 did a better job of dithering the edges so the polygons have much softer edges. The colors are similar to Marsh '43

So in your opinion guys, new SS troops or new Heer troops which are best?

Rob

I would love to see some bigger pictures fo these guys. I will probably pick them up but there is so much to catch up on now.

They may have some bigger shots on K&C UK pretty soon.

Rob

Sorry what are these new Heer troops? Looked on K&C site, but down at the moment. What's the best source for seeing upcoming new items? Thanks

Look under forthcoming releases here on the main treefrog page.

OK without sounding too dumb, what is the difference (in terms of uniform) between the Heer blokes and the SS lot, is it just the little Runic double S on the collar or are there other major differences, they look similar to me.

I just bought some of the new SS troops and I think they are the best yet. The only problem is setting up a diorama with them. I asked around and got suggestions of using the british commandos or russians as the opposition but it appears the russians are all in their winter garb and the Brit commandos are a little harder to get w/o paying a higher price for.

Both the new SS and the new Heer troops look pretty good. Will look a sight better after the new Big Red One and the (hopefully) new Brit & Commonwealth troops get them in their sights though.

Cheers

Hi Damian,

Here are some samples of WWII Army (Heer), SS and current Bundeswehr. Note the influence the SS camo had on the current German camo.
