In early January 1879 after a miserable Christmas in Natal, rating from the HMS Active man the Gatling on the top redoubt at Ft. Pearson. Ft. Pearson was on the Natal side of the Tulega River across from Zululand. The invasion is set for less than a week, and everyone's jittery! The Naval Brigade from Active had been groundpounding around Natal and the Frontier for many months prior, and eagerly wait for their comrades from HMS Tenedos to arrive. It's about time someone else wait for the ghosts in the night!

I wanted a place for Mountford Miniatures in the glossy section, feel free to post your troops! Mike

Great shot Mike! You can never have enough Gatlings. :)
Is that a JG cliff piece it's sat on? Looks very realistic.

Simon

Simon,
Gotten a lot of positive comments on the base. It's two JG cliffs together for depth. One is less than 12 inches wide so not a lot of room for action. Also , they are really expensive(120$ each) so I try to get my value out of them. Mike

Don't blame you, especially when they look as good as they do. Great blending in to the backdrop as well. Cheers for posting the shot.

Agree great shot and lovely pieces, I like Mountford very much, but must be disciplined.....

That really is very well done. Those bases look fantastic. I have a few different gatling guns. I would love to see some references where they were used.

Reference your request,KV, some examples of where the Gatling was used.
1864 Siege of Petersberg.
1871 By French at Le Mans
1873 By Russians in campaign against Khiva
1873 Ashanti campaign
1874 The fight at El LLano Estacado
1875 the war of Cuban independance
1876 With Terry's column in Sioux War (Refused by Custer)
1877 First use at sea by HMS Shah in action off Ylo, Peru
1877 Nez Perce campaign
1877 Used by both sides in Russo Turkish War
1878 Bannock Shoshone war
1879 Zulu War
1879 By both sides in the War of the Pacific
1882 Egyptian and Sudan war
1885 Riel Rebellion Battle of Batoche
1889 Phillipine insurrection

The gun was tested by almost every nation and so could be positioned with those troops wearing their full dress as if observing the performance. It certainly gives a wide spectrum for you to choose from.

Thanks for the info, very interesting, I also realize now how many wars I didn't know about.

Sorry, one I overlooked was of course the Spanish american war.

Very nice set-up. I only have on gatling gun set. Hope to get more one day. Thank you for the info on when the gatiling gun was used in combat.

War of the Pacific? 1879?

Wow! Thanks for the info. You must have the Encyclopedia of the Gatling!

KV, War of the Pacific 1879-1883 was fought between Chile and the combined forces of Bolivia and Peru over mineral rights. Chile won and annexed various chunks of land which left Bolivia as a land locked country. Hope this helps.

Has anyone ever seen this kit from Mountford called "The Road to Ulundi", or have, to post pictures?. I had the kit but sold it on ebay a couple years ago.

Thanks Trooper! 1879 I have only seen it on their website. Would be intensive to paint but worth the effort I am sure.

On the 22nd January 1879 , prior to the famed defence of Rorke's Drift, a little blunder occurred to British forces invading Zululand... Isandlwana. Brevet Major Francis Russell of the Royal Artillery followed Col. Durnford out from camp to, in their minds, rescue General Lord Chelmsford. About 8 miles from the camp, Durnford and his mounted troops had left Russell and his rocket battery in the dust. A Zulu skirming section from the Mkanakobosi:confused: cut around Durnford and found Russell. Russell fired off one rocket ,was shot and killed and the rest retired with a NNC company under Captain Nouse.

This is the painted Hales Rocket Battery set firing a 9pd rocket. Mike

Trophy? Very cool set. You have some real treasures there. Have you had them long?

It's the Mountford Miniatures Hales Rocket Battery. My Trophy set is in tatters and was overrun by the natives, leaving only the loader unscathed.
Mike

Thanks, KV. If I have the time tom. I'll post the Trophy set with the Mountford. The rocket battery is another unit I'd love to see more of. Scare the natives into submission with bottlerockets! Mike
