Painting gloss figures (1 Viewer)

Cheers for the comments guys, getting there slowly. I need to sort out my lighting for the photos, that's lousy.

Re the camel, I've seen several photos of this exact set up, so yes, the poor camel would be a poor deaf camel pretty quickly. I guess it would discourage the camel from raising it's head too much as well.

Not to mention the recoil  Must say that is a rather unusual and intriguing set for the collection though.

And no green either ;)

Simon,

How are you getting on with the 24th?

Jeff

Sorry Jeff, I've been slacking, but with good reason.
I got involved in a viscious confrontation with some conifer bushes last Saturday. I managed to sever many branches with a hedgetrimmer, but in desperation, one of the larger conifers whiplashed back at me, and the branch thwaked me in the eye, causing a nasty cornea (?) abrasion.

The upshot of this was several trips to eye casualty where they proceeded to turn my eyelid inside out, for a good root :)o) around and then stuck an eye patch on me for a few days, like this - ;).

My sight's still a bit blurred and i don't fancy tackling fine detail until it's a little better, so I've been branching out :)o) with something else a bit bigger.

I'm going to take a leaf :)o) out of John's (Leadman) book and get me one of dem der chainsaws and kick some conifer butt.

I feel my level of humour has remained completely unchanged. Patchy :)o) at best.

The parrot is dead. It is deceased. It is no more. ;)

Hello,
I've just painted my first 2 gloss 54mm figures but I'm not happy with the result.
I used Vallejo acrylic paints and then sprayed them with a gloss varnish.
I guess that I should maybe have used a brush for the varnish instead of a spray (the figures seem to be covered with small dots)....
Any other advice is welcome!
Thanks,
Michel

Well they look very nicely painted anyway. I have never got on with matt paint and gloss varnish, so I only use Humbrol gloss paint.

Jeff

Great attention to detail Michel!
I can't see that it would hurt to try and brush a coat or two of gloss varnish over the figures. I suspect it will create a deeper gloss finish.

I tried as advised. The result is a better gloss finish but it's not yet what I'd like to achieve.
I've applied 2 coats of Vallejo acrylic gloss varnish.
Next figures I'll try without first spraying them.

Is there special brushes to use for varnishing ?

Advices are welcome ! Thanks. Michel

Hallo Michael,

I am just gathering results on the same subject. All I can say so far is that it all depends on what type of varnish you use. Since waterbased paints seem to be the most used paints I would stick to waterbased varnish as well. Using oil-based varnish gives you a choice of hundreds of products to use, each claiming to be "Super gloss" - that is what is says on the tin anyway. Infact the waterbased paintsurface seems to "sucking up" some of the varnish at places where there is more paint or a special colour (white) is used. After hours of drying the resulting gloss surface looks uneven with patches of "not at all gloss" areas. This may sound stupid but I found out that Colour/Varnish do have a "Scale" also, meaning what might work on the surface of a sailing boat will most likely not work on such tiny figures. You could go for a second third etc coat but due to the rather long drying time it is not really an option. Try the waterbased varnishes. I am experimenting with some different product right now, looking at least promising so far. Hope to find out more soon. I will post the results once gathered here.

Hello Wolfgang,
Thanks for keeping me informed about the result !
Michel

Here are my two last painted figures : Russian drummer and infantry from Crimean war.
The pictures are before varnishing.
This time I won't spray first but only use brushes.
Hope the result will be better. When done, I'll post new pictures.

Hi Guys just reading thread on gloss figure painting and the use of gloss varnishes for a finish. I use all makes of acrylic paint for my glossies but to finish off, after experimenting over the years, i found an acrylic gloss varnish produced by MP miniature paints who produce paint for war gamers. The varnish is tough I use 2 coats allowed to dry overnight prior to second coat,Ive found it gives a really smooth, high gloss finish.I use a brush to apply and get very good results (see my public profile) Not sure whether it can be obtained outside UK,but heres a contact where they stock the complete range some of the other colors are OK. the scarlet is too thin I use valejo scarlet. contact www.magneticdisplays.co.uk

Cheers John

Hallo Michael,
really nice figures you got there!!! I am stuck with sculpting right now and don't find enough time for painting but it looks like I am getting close with some decoupage varnish and a simple trick. I keep you informed once finished.
Wolfgang

Hello John,

thank you for directing us to your profile. Well worth a visit fantastic figures indeed. I allways liked colonial troops, especially India is a most colourfull subject. Hope you will be posting many more pictures of your troops. You seem to have solved the "Glossy-Varnish-Issue" - really great work.

Michel,

These are very smart!......nice castings as well.

Jeff

And here they are with their two coats of Vallejo acrylic gloss varnish.
Better result than first time but I will still try the varnish recommended by John. The figures in his profile have a really nice gloss finish.
