Can anyone tell me the story behind Regal out of New Zealand? It sounds like there must be quite a story with Imperial Productions being right there...

I believe that they used to scupt and paint for Imperial and left to start their own business...I actually had some of their figures, which looked near identical to the Imperial offerings..Do not know anything about the behind the scenes dirt...Michael

Pete,

I don't know if this is what you're looking for (and you may have been there already) but here is their history from the Regal web site.

From the bits and pieces I know , both brothers originally worked
for imperial before starting regal [who as far as I know are out of buisness , the shop is no longer being used ]
I dont believe they ever sculpted for imperial though I think David did all of this.

Aside from the soldiers of the world figures they painted for a US buisness they also had their own line which included some figures very similar to imperials  .
This resulted in some legal action [which I think proved to hard to proceed with ] so their is no love lost their.

We have an antique dealer here in Eyota (of all places) who has some Regal ACW. I'll see if I can ID them tomorrow...I'll be curious as to their value. Anyone track such things?

I have found out that regal are still in buisness [although their shop is gone]
they supply a couple of shops and sell direct . They are also still producing
the soldiers of the world range which are similar to trophy etc.
Heres a link to their website

Here is a couple of shots of the soldiers of the world figures
they produce.

These soldiers are extremely nice. I think one should check their above website. They have changed their Regal line and the Regal figures are now identical to the Soldiers of the World line, which to me is good news, because I have always thought that the SOW line was excellent and better than the Regal one. Check the nice ACW line and also the WWI and NZ lines. One to watch.

I guess this thread shoul be changed to the Other Glossy Manufacturers section;).

Just had a look at their website. Particularly like the NZ 1845 figures and the ACW. I wonder how they would go with Trophy ACW. Do they have any UK stockists?

I have one set of SOW FIW indians which I picked up a while ago on ebay. Unfortunately they don't go with my Tradition FIW as they are noticeably taller in scale

Thanks for posting the link to Regal, but on closer inspection, I'm just a bit worried about the origin of some of thier figures.

In particular I was looking at the images of the Western Front Soldiers, and the NZ Rifle Brigade, German 1914 wearing Picklehaube and German 1916 wearing Steel Helmet sets all look like the Armies in Plastics figures!!!! The exception is the Vickers MG team.

This is my AIP Figures

So what do you think ????

They are the same, certainly from the same or copied moulds (you sure can explain this technical part better than me:D). I remember that a while ago Regal also used to sell the Armies in Plastic range through their website. Not anymore. So either there has been some kind of deal here or we have another legal imbroglio...

I dont think their is any wrong doing their ? , I believe the producers of Armys in plastic also own the" soldiers of the world range" regal produces for them. So I would asume it is all under licence.
While the shop was still up and running I was told that any of the armys in plastic figures could be made in metal if desired .

I,m not sure on the UK stockists , I think they should go ok with trophy but as you say [the Soldiers of the world figures in particular] are on the large side of 54 mm .

I questioned REAL about the AIP look-alikes and this was the reply

Yes your'e right, a large number of the "Soldiers of the World" figures are the same as those used for "Armies in Plastic". They were supposed to be complimentary ranges giving the option to collectors who preferred one or the other (or both!) types. More emphasis has been placed on AIP in recent years and I'm currently working on creating new sets for a number of the different series. Almost all current AIP sets are available in metal, and in fact a study of some of the sets on our website will give a clue to some of AIP's future releases!

Regards, Ian Farley

So I was right :)

Anybody know who sells Regal or Soldiers of the World in the US ? The Toy Soldier Gallery used to carry SOW but their site has no mention of them now. Stockade Miniatures shows them on their website but there is no response to e-mails.

I would have thought Toy soldier Gallery would be your best bet , I thought
it was them who own both Soldiers of the world and the Armys in plastic ranges ?

I think you can still get them from the Toy soldier gallery, you may just have to contact them and request them specially.

Strange, I got the impression talking to them when I picked up my latest figures that they were still sending figures over to the Toy soldier Gallery, maybe you should contact Regal themselves.
