In June of 2016, Jean and I took a 15-day escorted land tour with Trafalgar Tours called "Best of Finland, Russian and the Baltic States." While in Moscow, we took an optional half-day tour of the Battle of Borodino Panorama which took place in 1812 between Russia and Napoleon's Grand Army, That's Jean in blue and the bus we toured in for two weeks.

WOW !!

This would have to be 'A MUST SEE' for me, being a Napoleonic collector !!

It reminds me somewhat of the round panorama at the Waterloo battlefield, another epic battle form that era.

thanks for showing me this :)

Thank you for posting these photos from the parorama. I think we will see them again as background for pictures of toy soldiers. ....

You are welcome George. I have now seen all of them except for Atlanta.

I forgot to mention that the panorama painting is based on a critical moment during the Battle of Borodino with the units where they were located on the battlefield and what they were doing at that point in time.

Seeing the panorama via the photos above doesn't due it justice. It is a little like viewing it through a soda straw The actual painting is unbelievably HUGH, measuring 450 feet in circumference by 49 feet high! It was commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II to commemorate the centenary of the battle in 1912. The main artist was Frenchman Franz Roubaud. It was painted as being at 10 AM on the day of the battle with the viewer's vantage point at the center of the Russian army near the village of Semyonovskoye.

More paintings and displays.

More paintings... The first photo gives you some idea as to the scale of the battle with tens of thousands of men involved. The last photo is a close-up detail from the first photo.

Congratulations to such an experience. And thank you for the pictures.

Last one...Russian battle flag.

Hi, I think there is something interesting here.....Why would Tsar Alexander carry the Spanish Military cross, as one of his standards, unless he had a Spanish Regiment at the battle, reason why the wording on the flag is in Spanish....It is good to point out that the cross on the flag is that of St.Andrews, but the Spanish/Burgundy one...The Russian version of the St.Andrew´s cross is blue on a white background......
Given that the St.Andrew´s Spanish;Burgundy cross has as it origin the Hapsburg´s....what would it be doing in a Romanov camp is intriguing.....

I thought that it was a little odd also. I have no idea why there is a battle flag in Spanish of the 2nd Battalion of some unknown regiment. Maybe it is a captured standard from Napoleon's Grand Army? However, I really don't know what the order-of-battle makeup of Napoleon's army was at Borodino and whether there were any Spanish regiments that participated in the battle.

What a wonderful memory to have, I'm jealous. Been looking at the paintings especially the panorama just about all my life, and would love to see it in person who knows maybe someday.

Really interesting to see the uniformed displays and original equipment, thanks for that it made my morning. :salute:: regards Gebhard
