My father-in-law, a Vietnam veteran and career army (long retired) will tell you that the issue was not just the draft but pulling people out after 12 months of service. It was like fighting a war 12 months at a time plus no unit cohesion since units were not rotated out as individual units.

I second that! Looking at the footage, their response was textbook. They did what first responders are supposed to do, run towards the gunshots and not away from them. Their response to this unimaginably tragic event was heroic.
