Actually, I was thinking of something more like a flaming sword. You know, a bit of class. And, reversing an old expression, I'd also like it to read, "Angels rush in where fools fear to tread." Years ago, I had a second cousin by marriage whose father swore up & down that he really did see the...

According to official Libyan news sources, Irish & Scottish mercenaries have been used to help quell the riots. If that were true, why not just throw in a few Cossack units as well? The images & facts of the riots have been more than sobering without the Libyans & others making things up. Will...

If memory serves, after George Harrison's would-be assassin was arrested, the guy's mother had the gall to blame "the system." I don't pretend to know current British politics, but I do know that good people do not deserve to have THEIR lives overturned by mob rule, the members of whom...

    Whoooo busted!

There IS some justice in this world! And, as we used to say in grade school, "oooh, someone's in trouble." One could also call this a teachable moment!^&grin^&grin

Mightier than the Sword: Uncle Tom's Cabin and the Battle for America

Good article. Well worth the read. Many years ago, I was fortunate to have been able to purchase the second printing of the book, along with Stowe's autograph. Also interesting to read about Stowe's Paris sojourn in David McCullough's "The Greater Journey."

    Napoleonic Trivia #36

One thing was that the horses were trained to be less skittish, less animated, shall we say, as Napoleon was not a good rider. He rode like a sack of potatoes on a saddle & sometimes fell off his mounts. Napoleon was a crack shot but was quite the opposite of Wellington (who was, by the way, a...

    Napoleonic Trivia #35

Well, if it's the same 19th Century print that's in my collection, the offering would be a potato.^&grin^&grin

The Civil War on Drugs Chapter 5

{sm4} You're right about it being better than the HC, especially if you're thinking of the last G'burg presentation. Put this show as an addendum to the book, "The Story the Soldiers Wouldn't Tell." More teens would read history.^&grin

    Myths about the Civil War

O, I see. So if you notify your intended victim ahead of time, then your ensuing action can't be terrorism. It legitimizes everything, That's where Timothy McVeigh went wrong. And the Southern Hospitality shown to the black troops at Ft. Pillow shows the difference between that action and any...

And to think that it all began with a terrorist attack on Federal property!:rolleyes2:

    ------------------ par Napoléon

Cronin's appendix is entirely in French. It would be interesting to see if there is a complete work available. The first & last parts ended up in Warsaw. English is fine, but there's nothing like the original, as things often get lost in the translation, as you know.

    ------------------ par Napoléon

Certainement!^&grin^&grin See appendix B in Vincent Cronin's "Napoleon Bonaparte: An Intimate Biography." It contains the mid-section only, keeping N's mis-spellings. According to Cronin, the manuscript was dispersed after the death of Cardinal Fesch and, apparently, never re-united.

Well, his political tract was "Le souper de Beaucaire," but his lesser-known work was "Clisson et Eugenie."

Conspiracy Theories: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly.

A co-worker's son had left his office in the Pentagon to attend a meeting elsewhere in the building. Otherwise, he would have been killed, too. Had several students with friends or relatives who worked in the Towers. One student's daughter survived because she tripped & fell while running out of...

Conspiracy Theories: The Good, the Bad & the Ugly.

Wow! The Custer Conspiracy was a great one. Hadn't heard that one before. After 9/11, one of my students told me that former VP Gore was in league with Bin Laden. When I asked him why, he said. "two things; first, notice that Gore has grown a beard and, second, that you have "Al" Gore & "Al"...

What are the Forum members reading

I recently finished "The War For All Oceans," by Roy & Lesley Adkins, which takes the reader from the Nile through Waterloo. It's a great read for anyone who's interested more in the lives of the common men & women on all sides of the naval conflicts from that time period and less about what Sam...
