To Buy or Not to Buy… and Then Regret It Forever

Special thanks goes to Dietz, whose recent comment helped spark this topic. Every collector has that one elusive set—or an entire Top 10—they dream of tracking down. But finding and acquiring those pieces takes more than just desire. It requires the right opportunity, enough money, and most...

Trophy Sets That Never Were (But Should Have Been!)

AI usually does pretty good work for me, but this time it missed one smokestack. Unfortunately, AI still isn’t perfect and sometimes makes silly mistakes—known as hallucinations. But if you train it properly and use specialized text-to-image software like Leonardo AI or MidJourney, the results...

    Needed UK based collector

Tom, to avoid the headache of dealing with UK sellers who, for various reasons, won’t ship to the US, just use forward2me.com. They’ll provide you with a UK mailing address and then forward the parcel to the US. It’s actually cheaper than eBay’s Global Shipping Program.

Trophy Sets That Never Were (But Should Have Been!)

King George V and Tsar Nicholas II looked so alike they were often mistaken for twins, and there’s rich WWI historical context that could inspire a Trophy-style set. “Cousins at War – 1914” Theme: The tragic irony of two lookalike monarchs—once allies and family—leading empires now on...

Trophy Sets That Never Were (But Should Have Been!)

Thank you, Martyn—what an excellent idea. Len would be proud of this set. For someone who doesn't know the story, I took the liberty of sharing a brief overview. ⚔️ The Death of the Prince Imperial (Napoléon Eugène Louis Jean Joseph Bonaparte) Date: June 1, 1879 Location: Near the Ityotyosi...

Well, it explains it, but it's almost impossible to identify the regiments.

Not sure what happened, but your photos are a bit blurry today. The ones you took before looked great!

One more detail: both regiments—the Tirailleurs Sénégalais and the Algerian Tirailleurs (Turcos) in these Trophy sets—were equipped with the Fusil Lebel Model 1886 M93, which served as the standard rifle for French colonial infantry during the Boxer Rebellion and the early stages of World War I...

This set is traditionally attributed to the Boxer Rebellion, but the uniform details strongly suggest it could also represent a World War I-era unit. :). Your white-uniformed regiment would definitely fit within the Boxer Rebellion range.

Trophy also made a mounted figure of the Algerian Tirailleurs for this regiment. I have two of them and will try to find the box with them and post a photo later.

Hawkeye, This is further proof that these figures belong to the Boxer Rebellion range: Trophy’s Dragon Crest DC21, which features Turcos (Algerian Tirailleurs) in a Boxer Rebellion set. That set also uses oval bases, and the officer figure is virtually identical to the one in your set. DC21...

This set appears to depict the French Tirailleurs Sénégalais, a colonial infantry regiment composed primarily of West African soldiers who served under French command. These troops were active from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century and participated in multiple campaigns across...

Please show you " the harder to find sets". Oh, I feel that in my soul! Watch out for those snipers! Your options are simple: either become the sniper, or when your grail appears, bid so high your wallet cries, but your future self high-fives you. Short-term pain, zero long-term regret!

Deitz, It was a no-brainer for me. This set is quite scarce, so most people don’t even realize it existed when they see it for the first time — like stumbling on a unicorn in full dress uniform! Thank you for the valuable advice. We might just have to start another thread: “To Buy or Not to Buy”...
