AIP figures remind me a little of the style of the traditional lead soldiers, hence the glossy looks.

Apparently, the Gatling Gun, as used by the British Army, carried two rifles affixed to the gun carriage for the close protection of the crew. I too was disappointed with the two riflemen. It would have made more sense to have them in non-firing poses to supplement gun crew of three.
