I am thinking about repainting this very old figure. Spanish make and factory painted. I think that the sculpt is very good but the painting can be improved.

Victor,

I have that drummer too, he was made by ARMY HOUSE and I painted him about 15 years ago .....

maybe I should repaint him again too ???

Hi John,

Army House - thats it! Mine actually came with a factory finish. The difference between yours and mine is obvious.
Not sure whether you need to repaint yours. For me, I am using it as a painting exercise to improve my painting skills.
I want to hone my shading techniques and as I use oils, this requires a lot of practice.

I notice that there is the handle of a short sword on the left hip of the drummer.

Looking at the back of the figure, there is a dent in the coat skirt where a short scabbard should exit.

I intend to insert a scabbard in this position. The visual references of Prussian drummers seem to suggest either with or without a short sword.

Victor,

I'll have a look at mine and post an image for you.

All my Prussian references for uniforms of that period show a sword, hung from a waist belt that is under the coat, so you only see the hilt and the lower part of the scabbard.

Here's the pics on the dent and the simple Airfix scabbard that I added under the coat. I drilled into the dent for a better fit to glue the scabbard.

Sorry Victor,

I forgot to send you the picture of my figure, but also dind't have his scabbard protruding from his coat tails

He has a small indentation when it should be, so like you, i will add one, thanks for showing me your repair, it looks just right :)

John

Hi John,

I used the Airfix scabbard (French Grenadier) as it has a nice chunky look, better than the flat Historex part. In fact, I always preferred Airfix muskets and infantry sscabbards to Historex which always has a flattened look about them.

Now started to repaint the figure. I'll paint him as a IR21 drummer. Face has been painted. The lace was first undercoated with yellow ochre then red. This helps to block out the very dark blue colour underneath as the oils are translucent.

Nice progress, Vic!

Some of the figures in the Army House catalog were sold by Franklin Mint in Germany. This one was in a series on Frederick the Great's army.

Army House as a brand is now available through Alymer, if I remember correctly.

Prost!

I've scanned the catalogue and here is the drummer,

ARMY HOUSE has it listed as 5th Regt

Hi John and Mirof,

Yes. That's the one. At that time, it came factory painted.

Hi Brad,

Yes. Now available thru Alymer. Guess what? When I toured Spain, I bypassed Valencia (home to the largest toy soldier museum in the world) and Alymer.
Spain is a biiig country.

Finally completed painting this piece.

While handling it, the base got a little grimy. When I tried to clean it with thinner, the varnish and stain became sticky and came off.
When I wiped it off, I realised that I could create a two tone base effect, leaving the top part undisturbed.
