Hi Guys,

Following on from our little dio featuring “The Home Guard” I want to introduce you to one of the funniest men who ever put on a Home Guard uniform…Mr. Robb Wilton

Robb Wilton was a superb North of England comedian who specialized in monologues in which he usually portrayed himself as a procrastinating and work-shy individual.

His most famous monologue began with…”The day war broke out…” Listen to it here

Among his great fans were…Ken Dodd, Les Dawson and… John Winston Lennon!

I expect all other Brits out there will appreciate his dry, wry self-deprecating humour as will our Aussie and Kiwi cousins.

It will be interesting to hear if our friends across the Atlantic enjoy his humour…Hope you do…Ladies and Gentleman…"Mr. Robb Wilton"!

Best wishes,

Andy C.

^&grin Very good and definitely wry as you say Andy. I well remember in the early 80's working in an office for large building company my two bosses both in their fifties would often walk about muttering 'The day war broke out my wife said to me...' I think he was one of those performers who were in the hearts of the public in those days along with the likes of Stanley Holloway and George Formby. You can easily see in his work the gentle humour that was very similar and possibly and influence years later to Dads Army.

Very good, just reminds once again I would like the balance of the Home Guard figures, 5 on my calculation. You know what they say...the squeakier the wheel the more oil you give it...{sm4}, Robin.

That specific video doesn't play in the US but having found another, I suppose it's humor best appreciated by Englishmen or folks down under just as I'm sure some American humor doesn't play in the rest of the world.

I agree Brad, but occasionally there are real surprises. An example being that the US version of the Brit series 'The Office' is just so much better than the original. funnier , more fleshed out characters and a superior performance from Steve Carell just made it better, Ricky Gervais has even said it superior to his version. Very rare a remake is better than the original.
