Here is another Russian casting being painted. Generally, these figures offer excellent value as single (or preassembled) pieces just waiting for paint to be slopped on. I do wash and scrub them in detergent as they seem to be covered in some disgusting black oily patina. Sometimes, the wash causes the assembled parts (if any) to come off but I simply epoxy these back into position.

Hi Victor,

I have this casting somewhere in my box of 'figures to paint', maybe I should do him soon and we can compare ???

:) :)

Hi John,

Please do. But I suspect you'll probably finish him sooner than me...:)

I agree about the quality of the castings coming from Russia these days, those that aren't pirated Andrea, Pegaso, etc. I've been picking up some 18th century figures recently, such as a Rogers' Ranger (I think it's a portrait of Major Rogers himself) and British infantry figures. There are some very good Swedish infantry figures, too, as well as Russians. I've got some samurai, too.

Some of mine have that blacking on them, too. I think those are finished to be sold as "antiqued" figures. I do as you, I strip them to the bare metal, then prime and paint.

Prost!

Hi All,

Managed to complete the hussar to this stage.

Well done, Vic! I love his face, and you've really made the detail on the dolman and pelisse pop.

Prost!

They are very good sculpts and your painting skills are really doing this hussar justice. First class eye candy :)

Am struggling to get into the English version of the EK website though but the pictures are not in Russian 😉

Hello Malcolm and Brad,

Thanks for your very nice comments. Can't make a nice purse from sow's ear, right? the EK sculpt and casting was very good to begin with.

I do find their style of sculpting/casting to be caught in between new commercial toy soldiers to atelier masterpieces. For eg, the overall figure is just very well sculpted but the casting on the sword and sabretache and slings appear a little bulky. Some details are also fugitive.

Their figures are probably subcontracted and painted for commercial vendors for collectors but sometimes bought by diy enthusiasts like us at reasonable prices.

I finally finished the groundwork on this figure and then added a fence prop to it.

The final pics. I've largely enjoyed this latest round of painting exercises working on several types of figures. The final pics were all taken with an iPhone 6+ camera against a black velvet background with a single white LED source, all simple setup. Thanks for looking and for all your nice inputs and comments.
