I really love the "Belle epoque" french colonial period, but I didn't want to make the classical " Beau geste" dio with the blue-white french foreign legion in a fort in the desert. I wished to make a dio with the " armée d' Afrique" and the " troupes coloniales" in Morocco with all their colorful clothes they wore from the middle 19th century till 1962, when the colonial time ended. With modification and repaints of 5 brands included KC, I could make this dio.

in the latter part of the 19th century Morocco’s weakness and instability invited European intervention to protect threatened investments and to demand economic concessions. The first years of the 20th century witnessed a rush of diplomatic maneuvering through which the European powers and France in particular furthered their interests in North Africa. In 1912 France sent troops to "protect" Morocco. But 3 weeks after the signature of the " Treaty of Fez" this town rose up ,and some french citizen where killed. Some thousands french troops were sent to Fez to pacify the town. Many rioters were put in prison and some were shot.

France had in north Africa "l' armée d' Afrique" composed of different corps: the " french foreign legion",the " Zouaves",french from the 1900 in their expensive uniform,the " Chasseurs d' Afrique" ,french colonial cavalry,the" tirailleurs marocains" ( moroccan auxiliary troops),the "turcos", the " spahis" natives arabs in their red shirts ( the spahis refused to wear the french national blouse because in that period the jews used to wear blue coats.So the militaty intent made them red shirts with the red cloth of the trousers).

The " troupes coloniales" also called " la coloniale", were another troop. They were from 1822 till 1900 the marine infantry. From 1900, they became part of the infantry and were used in the colonies.

I hope you enjoy, positive and negative comments are welcomed.{sm3}

An officer "spahi" is questioning a deserter moroccan rifleman involved in the troubles of Fez.Both are arabs, so no misunderstanding about the language!

PS: for historical correctness, this scene should take place in a subsequent moroccan troubles. In fact the " tirailleurs marocains" were created in june 1912, and the uprising of Fez was in april 1912. The morrocan riflemen wore a red ottoman cap surrounded of kaki cloth.

Some french foreign legion troops and zouaves go and check a warehose.

Is this moroccan guy in jail or in his home watching the troubles out of the window? You decide...^&grin

Thank you for showing us this very interesting subject.
You should collect Beau Geste and Hiriart figures--lots of colonial troops: France, Italy, Germany, etc.
Hocker is a good source too.

Here are several of my scenes

Nice details in your diorama Poppo, such as the scenery through the arch. But I have to ask what's going on with the blue material hanging outside one of the buildings ? I'm guessing its some sort of workshop !

Thank you. Hanging outside the building are some kind of blankets or tatters, like in the photo below. Well, I m happy you like the photo behind the arch, but that is the most simple stuff. The several working hours on the dio went elsewhere ( buildings, weatherings, hiding bases, colours)..):p

Oh yes I know about the hours making something from scratch even when it looks like something simple ! ;) You've done a good job with your diorama of French North Africa;)
