Just listened to a fascinating BBC Radio programme on the New York blackout of 77.It built up a really vivid atmosphere of a city sweltering in a hot summer and tense with fear due to Son of Sam.It gave the impression that something had to give and when the blackout struck all hell let loose.I wonder if any of my American friends on here have any memories of this night way back then?.

Have you seen the Spike Lee film "Summer of Sam"? It covers the time you are mentioning. It's not really a thriller but a look at how people reacted around that time to events and what their lives were like. It's well worth a watch. But Son of Sam is lurking in there too....

I caught the last half hour of it once and it did look really good, will keep an eye out for it.

Cheers

You need to count all of the people who from NYC and are turning 30 this year, to get an idea of what people did in the blackout ;)

Prost!

:D Yes it can't have been all bad!;)

Rob,

Got your pm. I wasn't in NY then. In the summer of 1977, I was living in Washington, DC and getting ready to go to Law School up in Massachusetts, having just been accepted so I did hear about it (obviously) but, honestly, it didn't make a big impression upon me as I had other things on my mind.

I see, thanks anyway Brad.It must have been a long and frightening night in NYC.

I was living in New York City and I was ten. All I vividly remember was (1) my older relatives being very fearful of looting (and a bit racist about who they percieved as being the likely looters) and (2) everyone being terrified of the "44 Caliber Killer" (that's what he was called before he started sending notes calling himself the Son of Sam).

I had just mover to Florida after growing up in NJ, it was just a story on

the evening news....since nothing like it had ever happened before.
