Hi Folks, Yesterday the owner of a 1950 Chek built 251 was at the farm with his crew to work on his 251 and turn it back into a 251 C version. We had already cut the personel compartment out and they went at it yesterday readding armor on the sides.
The ribs you see in the rear view are only tempoary and will be removed once the armor is all welded in and the rear added.

took a few pix, not the best it was a real rainy grey day.

Rob,

The postage would kill you. How about one in 1:30 scale?

Fubar,

Does the fun never stop at your place? Looks like a whole load of fun. Jealous. I want a halftrack to play with.

Well, It's been stored there for 3 years now and just now getting worked on. I took it for a few spins around and pulled a downed tree out of the pasture with it, thats all. It's a pig to drive for sure. Not bad once you are moving but where it has to be parked requires some sharp turns at the lowest of speeds, very difficult with only 1 good arm and no powersteering!.

They have tracked down a 37mm AT gun {idaho I think} bored down to 50 cal. and are talking about mounting the gun less the wheels and legs and make a platoon leader out of this vehicle. I'm trying to talk them out of it!They have an MG42 that is MORE than adequate!

It was fun and I did a little tack and stitch welding .More welding next weekend and Then some more fun with a cutting torch to get the rear end cut to fit and reattatch. Fenders, storage boxes, floor and seats replaced, paint and it'll be ready.

Hi guys,

Thats pretty neat but I would have to say they should go with the MG 42. Be a lot easier to maintain and get ammo for:rolleyes:

Still fun to see an old vehicle being resurrected.

All the best

You should contact Louis' upholsterer about replacing those seats. :p

Fub,

Get 'em to stick with the MG42 and tow the 37mm. Best of both worlds. Look forward to more pics as the restoration develops, if you can.

Wraith, You are right of course. They have bigger goals, a 222 Armored car,{Thats been started} A stug 3{ Perfect converted vehicle available, just expensive} among others I heard them talking about. Running off and speniding a bunch of $$4 on a AT gun is taking their eyes off the ball.Besides, I dont know how many 37mm guns were still around by 44.The rest of their club are all Allies 44.They complain the MG42 burns up blanks too fast, very true, very expensive, it just SPITs out the brass.

A real challenge would be to convert their 251 into a 251/9 Stummel. They could fabricate that right there at our shop.

On a side note one of the guys had a NON GUN MP40 that fires 9mm blanks full auto. the firing mechinism is BACKWARDS . I still dont know exactly how it is vented but the firing pin is backwards, the rounds load in the clip backwards and it ROCKS!

Now that just sounds like a trip to hospital waiting to happen.
But, if it rocks, then that's OK. Just remember to stand directly in front of him when he fires. :p

Simon, No, It still reports , flames from the muzzle, the way I understand it the bore makes a U turn .Mass produced for reenactors.About $2500 Yankee bucks, roughly 1/5 of a REAL MP40 without the headaches and hassles of all the FBI and Legal hoops one needs to jump thru to obtain a class 3 firearms license.
They also make a PPSH and working on a Sten. Some semi auto blank only nonguns too.

www.SSroom.com is the web adress.

My buddy Gerry { the Jerry} keeps his original broken down into every piece possible, and keeps them all stashed in different places ,just in case he's ever burglarized.

Cool stuf but my days for that kind of fun are behind me.We just let them store their vehicle at the farm and make the metal shop available. I decided I'm going to let these guys help me in an old fashioned BARN raising when it's time to build my Museum! Fair is fair!
