Interesting to read the title of this figure: "Union Infantry 114th Pennsylvania Zouaves Advancing at Trail No.1" "Advancing at Trail"?? Interesting expression.....wonder how/ why that phrase was selected?
I would think it is named after the way in which the figure is carrying his weapon. Carrying a rifle horizontally is called 'at the trail'. Favoured in drill by Gurkhas and Light Infantry even today in the British Army.
