So, what do you think? 40mm buys you twice as much for your money with the detail being pretty good and also, allows for a larger diorama in the same space... or are you a stickler to 54mm. I think it would be interesting to go the 40mm route. I have always liked variety in my collecting habits and I have seen some collections having different scales of figures ranging from 15mm to 90mm displayed in the same curio cabinet. My collection comprises of matte and glossy, several period ranges, several manufacturers represented in both metal and plastic. I have up to now, kept the scale between 54mm and about 65mm and I don't know if I can venture out of this scale range and feel good about it but, it's just a thought...

I'm tempted to buy some 40mm, there are some very nice figures in my areas of interest, in that scale, but I couldn't display them with my other figures, except in a large diorama, in the background, to help force scale.

But for anyone who collects Seven Years War, there is a maker in Germany, Saxony, to be more specific, Peipp. His sculpting is excellent, his figures are very animated, and he has some very well done figures in his line. He also has very good figures in his 54mm catalog, too, covering some of the same periods, but I haven't made the move to buy any of the smaller figures yet.

Prost!

I would do 40 mm in a heart beat, however they are unpainted. I might get some anyway, they look great. Perry Maintures makes some nice 40 mm Napoleonic Peninsula War figures as well.

To some extent it is a question of scope vs detail. The 40mm figures give action displays more scope but generally at some sacrifice of detail. Still there are some nice options out there in 40mm, like these 1st Legion cavalry

and these

And then there are these very nice Spartans and Persians

Actually I would love to see these in the 1st Legion NAP scale of 58mm or so.

For me it is alas bounded by the painting issue. My painting skill is non existent and I am still waiting to get many Conte plastic Spartans painted as it is. Now if these guys came painted, they might be too tempting to resisit, even in this smaller size.

40MM figures have been around for a long time and in recent years have caught back on with wargammers. The First Legion troops are very impressive and if I wasnt already heavily invested in 54-60mm Ancients I would be grabbing them up. Many older wargames guys like them because they are inexpensive enough to build modest forces, are a nice INBETWEEN from the normal 20/25mm wargames figs and traditional 54mm size.
I'd like to get some just for the fun of painting them but being the obsessive type I wouldnt be able to stop.

For homecasting, too, you can get the Prins August 40mm molds to make 18-century figures. I used those, when I first started casting, before moving to the 54mm Seven Years War Prussians and classic toy soldier molds.

I think the Meisterzinn line of molds also make 40mm figures, if I remember correctly.

I may be able to help you with your painting issue. We at TMTerrain stock all the 54mm and 40mm First Legion ranges. My back ground is wargaming so I have always painted my own figures and I have offered a painting service to the wargaming hobby for a number of years. We have the stock at hand and hopefully the skill to help you out.
Also, I have just picked up a Conti plastic Spartan and painted that. It looks great. I will get a photo of it and post it soon. Can I help you with everything :)

If you are interested then email me directly and we can discuss prices etc.

Hi,
I would like to buy pre-painted Napos in 40mm! The quality of this small figs from FL and also Perry Brothers are so good and usefull to create a diorama with more columns than in 1/32...

I would like to hear from the guys at First Legion on how their sales are on their 40mm ranges.I think there's a market for them especially if they were painted. If you sold painted 40's how much would you charge for a figure?

I would like to hear that answer as well, although I am afraid to find out for some purposes;):D I would hate to start over in a new scale but more figures for the same price is appealing, especially as well as they are done here.

Hmmmmmmm.......

I never really thought about 40MM figures before, but this might be a good way to stay involved with the Napoleonics after all, and in large quantities at a good price point and all. I must say the figures pictured on the work bench look excellent. Matt, will there be much new development at this scale in light of your 54MM range growing so much so fast? Simply curious...

This is one of my considerations to beat the recent higher costs of 54mm in the marketplace. I would like to know the answer to the cost of painted 40mm Napoleonics as well. I'm ok with going to a smaller scale as long as it's consistent in a diorama and enough poses are available. :)

I'm wondering if most manufactuers would be interested in doing 40mm as it would probably hurt their sales in 54mm,especially if painted.

I think that is a reasonable concern, especially if they are painted and as detailed as the First Legion 40mm figures.

I think there could be an interest in an pre-painted standart offer of figures in 40mm - for wargamers and also for collectors (which must "buy the next figure in the line". A producer needs both collector types in this size...
