Hello everyone, this is kind of a general request that does not pertain to a single specific manufacturer so that is why I put it here in the general thread. Essentially I tried searching to see if anyone here had done a study on the comparative sizes of different manufacturers soldiers, and really didn't come accross anything. I know how some stack up, but some of these more expensive lines like Thomas Gunn and ONWTC I have never has and am curious about. Would anyone here mind taking the time to show me how the following soldiers all stack up next to one another?

-Thomas Gunn
-Britains
-King & Country
-ONWTC
-Conte
-Oryon
-Collector's Showcase
-Any other relevant manufacturer

I would like to get into collecting some of these but without seeing them in person (there are't any shops in my area), I would like to get some pictures to look at the very least. Thank you everyone, and if this topic has been covered before I apologize, I did try and search the forum but didn't come up with anything.

Hi Kevin,

Having examined the list of manufacturers you have provided, I assume your primary interest is in seeing comparative photos of WWII figures from each of the manufacturers. Are you interested in seeing comparative photos of various lines in addition to WWII? I may have a few older photos that compare Delhi Durbar Elephant figures from several different manufacturers.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)

You are correct Pat, my primary interest is WWII figures. If you do not have the various manufacturers WWII lines, I would be happy to see how their other eras' soldiers stack up as well. I am sure they can't be too disproportionate to their WWII brethren. I appreciate your help!

Hi, Kevin,

I don't recall that anyone here has done a comparison of sizes/scales across a range of manufacturers, but we have discussed the differences in scales/sizes, and addressing them. There is a consensus among some collectors that we can accept some variation, as representative of the differences in size among people, up to a point, at which the differences become too noticable. The time period comes into play, too. If we're talking about the 18th and 19th centuries, some subjects require figures of the same size, as for a guard unit. In contrast, a scene from WWI or WWII could feature more figures of various sizes, which would look more natural.

I find that 54mm (as shown by Imrie-Risley, or Britain's Redcoat/Bluecoat figures, Ulrich Puchala's, Gammage's Rose lines) mixes well with 56mm (the actual size of classic Stadden "54mm" figures, and the figures of many German manufacturers), but when we get up to 60mm, the figures aren't just taller, but out of proportion, in comparison. But both sizes could still be used in the same display, to force perspective.

Prost!
Brad

Photo attached various manufacturers (if it can help){sm4}:salute::

1. Oryon Collection - 1:35 scale
2. Frontline - 1:32 scale
3. Conte Collectibles - 1:32 scale
4. W. Britains - 1:32 scale
5. ONTC, First Legion - 1:32 scale
6. King & Country, Collectors Showcase, Thomas Gunn - 1:30 scale
7. Elastolin - 1:24

There have been a few people comparing figure sizes for WWII figures to each other and to 1/30 scale AFVs.

This lineup compares Oryon, Frontline, Conte, W. Britains, ONTC and K&C figures. Note that the K&C figures are actually close to 1:28 scale.

http://www.toysoldiersclub.com/TOY-SOLDIERS-CLUB-Scale.aspx

Thomas Gunn figures were deliberately scaled to match K&C. Figarti 1:30 figures are generally a bit smaller than K&C and a few sets are smaller at around 1:30 vs K&C's actual 1:28. Note that Figarti also has made 1:32 figures. First Legion figures are consistently 1:30 so are noticeably smaller than K&C. CS figures have varied in size but are comparable to the 1:28 K&C size and have sometimes been a bit larger.

Hi Kevin,

I found my old photos, but I am certain they will not fulfill the need you experience. However, I am posting them as they are compare the works of several manufacturers. Perhaps someone will find them useful.

As I said earlier, my photos are of Delhi Durbar Elephant figures. And, as you can see, there are noticeable differences among the sizes, as well as the styles, of the elephants. Below you should see five photos comparing Beau Geste Kashmir Elephant (left side of photo) and the Britains State Glossy Elephant of the Nizam of Hyderabad (right side of photo.)

Warmest personal regards,

Pat

Hi Kevin,

Below you should find three more photos allowing you to compare the Beau Geste Kashmir Elephant with the glossy Britains State Elephant of the Nizam of Hyderabad.

Warmest personal regards,

Hi Kevin,

And,...finally...I have added the William Hocker Imperial Durbar Elephant carrying the Royal Standard of Baroda. Reading from left to right, the elephants are:

Left: Beau Geste Kashmir Elephant

Middle: Glossy Britains State Elephant of the Nizam of Hyderabad

Right: William Hocker Elephant with the Royal Standard of Baroda

While these are certainly not the WWII figures you collect, the photos clearly indicate significant differences in size and style among some of the manufacturers. All of these elephants are roughly 1/32 in scale, yet it is difficult to consider displaying them together. In fact, I have separate displays for the Britains Durbar figures, the Beau Geste Durbar figures, and the William Hocker Imperial Durbar figures. I think you can see why.

Even though you are not collecting the Durbar figures, I hope you have enjoyed and benefitted from seeing these three elephants grouped together. These elephants, as well as the remainder of my Durbar elephants and Durbar figures, are the most prized figures within my collection. It is always fun to find an excuse to show them to others. :wink2:

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

Thanks, Pat, Dave and Terry! I missed those comparisons, so that's good to know. I've been more up on the discussions of mixing scale/size in general.

Prost!

Hi Brad,

You are most welcome. I am glad you are enjoying the photographs.

Warmest personal regards,

Hi Guys,

Always glad to help!

I find this sort of discussion really helpful when I am trying to sort out my very limited display space. While I do mix my glossy troops together I dont mix in my Matte Durbar which are larger than the glossys. So as you can see the issues of scale come to bear on many eras.

Dave

Here are some shots compared to a 1:30 scale Honour Bound Tiger. The top of the Tiger chassis is 1800mm (~71") so it is a useful reference frame when looking at figures. As you can see the HB Tiger is 1mm short (1800/30 = 60mm) but still pretty close to 1:30. I have raised the Tiger slightly to compensate for figure bases.

Thanks for the comparison photos, Frank. They do a fine job of showing a 1/30 scale vehicle next to the "1/30" scale figures. Proves that, with the exception of the First Legion figures, that all the other makers appear overscaled next to the Tiger. The FL figures heads reach the deck which, IMO, looks correct when compared to the multitude of period photos, while the figures of the others are all too tall. Collector's Showcase has attempted to address the issue of the oversize figures by it's latest issue model of Wittmann's Tiger. It is a large model in terms of being larger than the standard 1/30 scale. It is a fine model that now matches the years of overscale figures that have been issued. CS has taken grief over this because it is advertised as a 1/30 Tiger, yet is obviously larger. I, for one, am quite pleased to have a Tiger that goes with the figures, even if it is a step up in scale, size wise. -- Al

Don't forget about Britain's and a few other manufacturers whose figures are smaller than K&C and in some cases FL.

Terry

So we can say that FL is the true 1/30 scale regarding figures??
Is that correct??

Thanks for all the input guys! Is there anyway we could get some of those cheaper 21st Century and Forces of Valor figures in there as well?
