I am a new member of the forum and avid collector of artillery - "The King of Battle." Two of my favorite pieces are John's 6 inch howitzer and 60 pdr gun; I think probably the best examples of Great War artillery on the market. The detail on the weapons is amazing and the range of gun crew and accessories helps recreate these historically important weapons.
To complete these two wonderful models we could really use a couple of more gunner figures. I think it is important to note that both of these weapons fired separate loading ammunition, meaning projectile and propellant were loaded separately. The projectiles and associated figures already available are rendered wonderfully and add an important dimension to any display. What we need now is a gunner figure carrying the propellant cartridge to the gun to complete that picture. Ideally, we could use a two figure set with one gunner carrying the cartridge to the gun ready to load and a second gunner figure sitting on a box cutting charges for the propellant cartridge. To be truly realistic, as I am certain the gunners on the forum can attest, the second figure needs an open box from which he draws the next cartridge and on the other side an open box in which he throws the discarded powder increments as he adjusts for range. Keep in mind that for both of these weapons the propellant cartridge came in a fabric bag, often silk or similar material. There are lots of illustrations of these charges on the web and some YouTube videos where you can see the loading of propellant. It would be brilliant.
The other gunner we could really use would have the ramrod needed to properly seat the projectile home in the breech. The addition of these figures would make a great piece even better.
My two cents; would like to hear other perspectives.
Cheers

Yes, I have to agree about your comments on John's WW1Artillery, they are wonderful, and making a big range of gunners to man these is something to applauded.

Most makers only make a 4 man detachment, including an officer !! These guns required a crew of at least 10 men and that's what John did.

Yes, having gunners preparing the charge bags is most appropriate, but I think he must have thought that preparing and loading projectiles looked more interesting ???

Anyway, I think that the figures (Scale Link) I assembled and painted for the 8 inch howitzer below, really shows the big guns and it's detachment in action, with the ammo numbers preparing both projectiles and charge bags, like you explained.

Hope you like it …..

Ditto. JJD's British Great War "Gunners & Guns" are great. Personally, I'd like to see the other aspects of the artillery covered like the OPs, the command post, and survey.
