8/7/42 - the USMC landed on Guadalcanal in the first US effort to climb the ladder towards Tokyo. Thus began a long campaign of grinding attrition for both sides. The Japanese forces beat up on the USN pretty good, but never could push the Marines out of their enclave or keep Henderson Field out of action.

A pause to remember and appreciate.

Uncommon valor was a common virtue. Hears to every last Marine on that island, from the ground pounders to the Cactus Airforce. You will be appreciated, and will not be forgotten in this house. Thank you.

A true turning point that is, perhaps, not as appreciated as it should be. It ground the Japanese to dust. It was a true combined services victory. -- lancer
