For you NHL fans and those who just like milestones, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Caps, had a hat trick last night, giving him 800 career goals, only the 3rd player in NHL history to reach that level. Ovi is one goal from tying Gordie Howe at 801, and then it will be Gretzky at 894. Quite the accomplishment. Congrats, Ovi. -- Al

He is a great player. Hockey is not a sport known for longevity. So all the more notable. Gretzky will always be the GOAT in hockey. His numbers were eye popping when you also look at assists, but Ovi is in that discussion.

Ovi is a pure shooter, Gretzky a lot more complete a player. Heck, Ovi's total goals and assists don't even come close to Gretzky's assist total. I am glad I got to see Gretzky, Howe, and Ovechkin play. -- Al

Speaking of hockey, that was an old school fan fight at the recent AZ-Bruins game. Apparently, one fan even got their finger bitten off like in a Gordy the chimp style attack. One woman took a Mike Tyson round house hook to the head from a Grizzly Adams-type and went down like a rag doll only to bounce back up like a trooper.

Ovechkin put 2 in the net tonight to move into 2nd place on the All-time Goal list with 802. Congrats Ovi. With his contract good through 2026, Ovi has a real good chance of catching Gretzky's 894 total. As one of only 3 NHL players to score 20 or more goals in 18 straight seasons, Ovi should catch Gretzky if he can stay healthy and plays until his contract ends. -- Al

Tip of the cap to Ovechkin.

Passing Gordie Howe is huge and as he sets his sights on being the all-time goal leader it is a “great” reminder that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest professional athlete.

Ever.

To your point, in his magic 5 season run from 1981 thru 1985, playing an average of 79 games per, Gretzky averaged 207 points per season, to include an average of 75 goals and 132 assists per. NO ONE has ever approached these numbers. Gretzky owns 9 of the 11 highest scoring seasons in NHL history (Lemeaux owns the other 2). Gretzky was a force of nature, a once in a lifetime player, all the rest are also-rans in terms of the GOAT. -- Al

Al:

As usual your post sums it up perfectly.

Gretzky’s numbers speak for themselves, add to that the fact that he did it all on ice/skates and the GOAT debate is over.
