On this day, 80 years ago "B" Company of 39th Militia Battalion led by Capt. Sam Templeton engaged the Japanese 1/144th Battalion at Awala on the Kokoda Trail. This Militia Battalion had no battle experience unlike the Japanese who had many years of fighting in China. Only raised to defend Australia this unit was poorly trained and ill equipped. The three regular Australian Infantry Divisions were still in the Middle East or returning home asap. However the boys of the 39th fought extremely well.
