...stunning stuff indeed!

Very interesting articles. Note that the central device on the ceremonial targe is the gorgon Medusa. This was also a very common shield device on Spartan hoplons. In particular, it is believed that Leonidas carried the Medusa device on his shield. -- Al

That is interesting. It is my understanding that during the Greco-Persian and Peloponnesian Wars, the Spartan hoplites would only have been nobles or aristocrats bearing their own personnel devices. Most other cities would have also fought this way, with the exception being Athens.

It was not until the mid 4th century BCE that the Spartans might have adopted the lambda or some other symbol. This was about the time that most Greek armies were based on levies led by aristocrats rather then comprising primarily aristocrats.

Wow, that is amazing that all of that history still exists. Thanks for posting this.

I have almost all of JJDs Highlanders and a few Gov't and Lowlanders, as well.

Some researchers believe that Spartan's shields would carry emblems that would correlate to unit (Morae) insignia, the emblem of the diety whose cult was dominant in the area of recruitment. -- Al
