In 21st Century US military jargon bases around the globe are called "lily pads" (analogous to the jumping off points for a frog in its pond) and the danger spots around the globe are described as the "arc of instabilty". In the 19th Century British Empire, Zululand was part of an arc of instability that ranged from Africa to South Asia and sites like Rorke's Drift were the lily pads. Ironically, in Afghanistan today where both American and British forces are fighting, some of the lily pads are in locations where the Victorian bases were found.
