Here's a non-descript knight which I got from EK castings identified only as 14th Century. I finally started to paint him and then I realised that I don't have a provenance for him. Moulded details are a crowned lion rampant and a crown horned helmet. I presume royalty, tournament and I read that German knights have a lot of horned helmets. Any suggestions?

Read more on armorials. The German knights really had the most number of heraldry drawn with horned helmets.
But I still haven't linked a specific knight with crowned lion rampant to a horned helmet.
I did read that many non-royal nobles also adopted a crown on their animal charges.

I've resculpted the nose.

I scoured all the refs but could not link a 14C lion rampant heraldry with a two horns crest. It seems that horns with ringlets at the ends resembling elephant trunks were quite common in german and danish armorials.
At this stage, I probably will have to either scrape off the moulded lion and paint my own heraldry or remove the horns and substitute with another crest for the lion heraldry.

That's exactly what I would do. Remove moulded in stuff - and choose another. I rather like the horns - I think I've seen some similar in Codex Mannesse illustrations?? jb

Hi jb,

Thanks for your input. Missed this. Yes, the horns look good but some of the crests with feathered modified horns also look good.

I didn't find any corresponding lion and horns heraldry in all the below refs as well as others except for the two mentioned links Sweden or Thuringia.

Both examples have crowned rampant lions and horns.

Hi All,

A slightly nostalgic thread for me. I miss JB here.

Finally got around to adding a wash over the steel armour.

Victor...Believe a lot of us miss "jb".

Appreciate you sharing your work.

Stay Safe.

I've decided that this knight will represent Albrecht Landgrave of Thuringia. He appears to have curly hair and a beard.

So I've resculpted the face and modified the helm.

Painted the figure to this stage. I'll probably have to resculpt the nose.
I've been binge-watching Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit....:)

Painted the peacock feathers. The mantling on the helmet is red and light grey.
