Hi Guys,
As some of you may already know Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood are making a movie of James Bradley’s best selling book “Flags of Our Fathers”.
Bradley’s book tells the story of the six Marines who raised the flag over Iwo Jima in the famous Joe Rosenthal photo – actually the second flagraising but the most famous.
Believe it or not most of the action scenes are being shot on Iceland!!! They have the same black volcanic sand beaches as Iwo. Obviously they don’t have Mt. Suribachi but these days C.G.I. (Computer Generated Imagery or should I say wizardry) can duplicate that.
There is a brilliant movie website that’s got lots of photos of the movie in production. I’ve seen at least 6 or 7 Amtracs as well as a whole bunch of Shermans, Halftracks, DUKWS, Landing Craft and assorted other military hardware of the period.
By the looks of it they’ve only got about a couple of hundred Marines, but, yet again, CGI can duplicate them into literally thousands!
On that particular note I watched a recent D.Day documentary by the BBC where they only had two dozen GI’s landing from one landing craft plus six beach obstacles and with C.G.I. they made it look like “The Longest Day”.
“Flags of Our Fathers” – the movie is scheduled for release early next year – perhaps to coincide with the Jan/Feb Anniversary – who knows?
I’m sure once the movie hits there’s going to be a lot of interest in K&C’s Iwo Jima releases – past and present. What’d you think?
