Andy,

When last we spoke, you indicated you were meeting with two factories in China about possibly producing some wood warbirds. I was just wondering what happened with the meetings, and if we aircraft fans have something to look forward to?

Hoping for a positive response,

Louis Badolato

And three with me.

I would love to see K&C making a M.C. 202 to go with the Italian figures of the Afrika Korps serie.

Pierre.

Guys, for an exciting answer to the question posted by this thread, see Andy's new thread, "Bits and Bobs".

Pierre,

Andy did make an Italian Macci fighter back in the early 1990's. A gentleman I know in Scotland named Chris says he saw it, but sadly, had to choose between it and a Fairey Firefly, and opted for the Firefly. I bought the Firefly from him, so I guess I can't complain, but I would really have loved to have seen that Macci.

Regards,

Louis

Rough choice.

The Fairy Firefly was a very interesting airplane as the Macchi was too.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the story behind those warbirds? They rarely come on eBay, Bill Sager has no pictures in his website, you find yourself lucky to have a Firefly... Are they so rare? Your book will be very helpful and will be a must for all of us.

My best regards,
Pierre.

l think they are pretty rare. Let me correct that. They are rare. To my knowledge, they don't even change hands. The trick is knowing where to find people that have them. That's why I consider myself pretty lucky to have two. Because they are so rare, that's why I've turned to Motion Models.

What's so great about Andy's warbirds? You just have to look at one, to see one and you'll know why. It's an instinctive thing. I always loved airplanes as a kid, especially fighters. I just did. When I saw these for the first time at Louis', it was love at first sight. I know that not everybody is nuts about them but I think they are just amazing. Take a look here to see some of the birds Andy has done, http://www.toysoldiersusa.com/cgi-l...ures&subcategory=1995&subsubcategory=WARBIRDS and http://www.toysoldiersusa.com/cgi-l...1995&subsubcategory=MORE WARBIRDS PLUS OTHERS

Pierre,

In 1990, K&C began producing beautiful Mohagony Warbirds (the first was a Spitfire). By my count with Andy, he made 101 different models, ranging in size from a tiny Sopwith Pup to an enormous 1/32 scale B29 Superfortress. Each popular aircraft (like the Spitfire, ME109, or Corsair) may have been produced in as many as 5-8 different markings, with as many as 150 made, while with the more unusual aircraft, only 1-5 may have been made in total. With these models, K&C produced pilots, groundcrew, fuel trucks and ambulances, as well as diorama pieces. K&C stopped producing these aircraft in 1996, after a Volcano eruption put the factories in the Philopines which produced them for K&C temporarily out of business. After an aborted experiment in polystone warbirds (a Corsair and an ME109) failed due to the excessive shipping costs of these heavier models, no aircraft had been produced until our constant grousing resulted in Andy's present efforts to bring back the wood warbirds via a factory in China. The book Larry Lo, Hans Hedrich and myself are writing will have a chapter on these aircraft, with photographs of the approximately 50 different K&C aircraft in our collections, including a B17G Flying Fortress, Junkers JU52, Heinkell HE111, Horsa Glider, Douglas A20 Boston, Junkers JU88 Nightfighter, F14 Tomcat, Blom & Voss 141B, Bristol Beaufighter and Grumman Tracker, to name some of the larger and rarer planes.

Louis

Looking at the brochure from Sager's under Autum954 it shows the Hurricanes on stands which looks like wheels up. Is this just at a different angle so you can't see the landing gear down? I was under the impression from Loius's talk's earlier that a trade mark of K&C planes where that landing gear was always down and fixed. Just wondering??

Since most of these planes are so rare, the next best bet is Motion Models. Motion has a nice Bristol Beaufighter, http://www.motionmodels.com/custom/mmc-080.jpg but you can get them custom made by them. I should know because I've just ordered one in a camouflage pattern, based on this, http://www.compass.dircon.co.uk/Beaufighter.htm

The one I ordered is second from the top a Mk 1F nightfighter of 25 Squadron. A beauty. In 32 scale, it will have a 22 inch wingspan. Awesome.

All the K&C planes came with gear down. I own that Hurricane, and can assure you it comes with the gear down. The warbirds also came with stands as well.

Thanks Louis it just looked like no gear in the photo. I knew I would get the goods on it from you...:D

As Brad mentioned here about the warbirds, seeing one in person and in a brochure does not give them due justice. They have an auroa about them that you can't get from polystone. The detail is not like Andy's newer sculpting but the overall look is just very appealing? It's hard to describe.

Wholly cow, I got promoted! Alas, I still have to take orders from Brad.

Not in this man's army my friend. I'm just the moderator. I report to the members.

I thought you were an officer and a gentleman. Well, at the very least we all know you are a gentleman.

Dear Andy,

Its been about a month since you told us you were awaiting sample warbirds. What's going on with the warbird factories? We are crazy with anticipation.

Regards,

Louis
