During the Gilded Age (1865-1914) in North America urban dwellers from Boston sought relief from the summer heat by traveling to the seaside resorts along the coast of Maine at places such as York, Ogunquit, the Kennebunks, Prouts Neck, and Bar Harbor. The young lady in our watercolor has made just such a journey in July of 1895 and is enjoying watching the waves crashing against the rocky shore of Cape Neddick, the location of Nubble Light, the most photographed lighthouse in America.
