William Clarke, a Royal Navy Seaman aboard the cruiser HMS Calliope, enjoys a holiday at the beach with his wife Kate and their son Harry.

"By the Beautiful Sea"

By the sea, by the sea, by the beautiful sea!
You and me, you and me, oh how happy we'll be!
When each wave comes a-rolling in
We will duck or swim,
And we'll float and fool around the water.
Over and under, and then up for air,
Pa is rich, Ma is rich, so now what do we care?
I love to be beside your side, beside the sea,
Beside the seaside, by the beautiful sea!

Another great photo. You don't have to see the front of the figures to get the story.

You're going to have to take my word that numerous period postcards and prints I have seen show enlisted men in the British army and Royal navy (French and German forces as well) dating maids, nursemaids, or nannies. It must be that they were the same "class" and "respectable." Tutors and governesses were probably higher class.

"Mrs. Clarke" could have been a respectable domestic. Seaman Clarke and Kate must have saved their money a long time to afford a vacation and family.
