This was a Russian casting. I didn't like the head and snipped it off, substituting an Airfix ECW head for it. The helmet is being remodelled.

I finished sculpting the helmet. The lower circular band was made from a strip of metal sheet. The top spike was made from putty. more hair was added to the head. The figure was sprayed white and I painted it with enamels.

Thanks for sharing, one day when I find some time and ambition I going to try something like this.

Hello EndTimes,

Happy to share. You don't have to wait that long. Some of these are very simple conversions - substitute a head, arms, legs weapons etc, and there is so much enjoyment to be had in customising up your own figure.

I have started to paint silver onto the figure, adding to the helmet, shield box, axe and chainmail.

I started a project to convert some Jecsan Vikings with bigger shields and different helmets. Maybe I will try something with their weapons too. Thanks, Mike.

Hello Mike,

Have fun with your Jecsans Vikings conversions. I would also recommend that you pin the parts and join them with contact cement. Here's a related website for your enjoyment:

I have further painting my Viking Hersir piece and thanks for looking!

The figure looks a lot better with that last paint job, nice work with the face. Thanks for the tip on the website, that is mine :D I started with those Vikings, but I am waiting for some new epoxy, figures and came up with some new ideas. Between work and working at my house, it has been hard to do anything. I should have finished or will show some progress in a few months. Maybe I will be able to do something tomorrow with one or two figures. I have been more creative with the Playmobil. I made some molds for the beards and fur capes, and who knew you could use fishnet stocking material for chain mail. Thanks again, Mike.

Hi Mike,

Hilarious! I didn't realise that that website was yours.

Stockings were used to represent chainmail in a prize-winning model many years back:

Cool, I try to see if I can use the stocking material with some epoxy. Keep an eye out in the next few weeks on my website, I started painting again :D I have not painted any toy soldiers in about 3 years. And I really have not been painting like I used to, in about 10 years. I started using the Vallejo paints and I like the way they look, colorful and smooth. I should have some conversions done by the end of the month. Thanks, Mike.

Just curious, when you paint the chain mail. Do you paint the mail with a metal color and then give it a black wash?

Hello Mike,

For this piece, that is what I did. Silver colour, let it dry, then wash with thin black paint. Word of caution - make sure that the wash diluent does not redissolve the underlying silver paint. Otherwise the end result is a grey black mess. I use humbrol silver and then when very dry, a light wash with humbrol black thinned with turpentine. I can't remember which diluent is very strong but don't ever use lacquer thinner. Not sure about white spirit either.

One way to overcome all the above nonsense is to use acrylics. Water is the best diluent and will not attack dried acrylics.

Another technique would be to paint everything in black, let dry, then dry brush with silver on top.

Thanks, I usually use black or dark gunmetal as background color then I use a dry brush with a bright color to highlight the chain mail. I have been trying different things with Vallejo paints to see what looks the best. So far I like the results. I'm working on 25 different figures right now. I should be finished in about 2 weeks from now, only painting on the weekends or one day a week. I'll post some figures when I finish. I have to get some more colors tomorrow to test different things with washes and skin tones.
