I set out yesterday morning (13th August 2016) in company with my wife Debbie to visit Bosworth Field.
(A must for me since collecting John’s WOR series.)
It was a just over two hours trip for us from Essex to the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre in Leicestershire. Weather was excellent and the roads running well for a change.
We arrived dead on the opening time of 10.00 am. What a wonderful place - set in a peaceful scenic Country Park.
I would highly recommend a visit. Very clean, well laid out. The staff very enthusiastic and happy to chat and answer questions. A very well stocked gift shop is on site. They have just about everything you could want - except for John’s figures! I came away with a Graham Turner print of “The March from Leicester 21st August 1485”
The nucleus of the site is an old farm going back a couple of hundred years. New buildings have been added with Lottery grant money.
The guided walk (a present from my daughter) was fun, informative and bang up to date – so far…… The search for the definitive location for the Battle is still ongoing.
Overwhelming evidence has now taken the focus to a few miles further out - The Fen Hole/Farm (Dadlington Parish) area – private land unfortunately.
There are two main viewing points (cleverly framed to focus your vision on the far away areas. Both have an artistic impression of how the terrain would have looked like then.)
On the way home we stopped at St James’ Church in Dadlington to pay our respects. It is believed to be the only known resting place for the slain of Bosworth Field.
A great day out that we both enjoyed tremendously. In fact so much we are going back next Sunday for the Annual Battle of Bosworth Anniversary weekend!
