This model has a rather long drawn-out history. Bought a few years back, I carefully assembled it until I discovered that it was missing a cape. There were no assembly instructions and the kit had numerous parts (about 50!!) When I wrote in to Alexandros about the missing cape, he apologised and sent me the missing part. By that time, I was deeply immersed in various other largish projects. Naturally I misplaced the cape for a while. Just found it again! So I've decided to assemble it NOW before any of the parts go awol. I have added a spare round shield (Andrea or Pegaso?) in case I want to make a simple conversion.

So far, the kit looks gorgeous and I can't wait to start painting it.

Hi John,

Here's a little progress. After reading about roman cavalry and the background to this piece, he is a historical figure - a Gaul named Flavinus serving as signifer (Standard bearer) in a cavalry unit ala. There are no details on the shield so I've finally decided on an oval shield based on the ones excavated at Dura Europos. These are flat shields made of wood planks joined side by side and painted over. The drawings are very elaborate.
Since the shield bosses are missing, I've decided to make my own based on other sources. Here's the basic shield cut out from a thick plastic sheet and scored with a sharp knife.

I tried to sculpt a boss with a face on it.

I also started to paint some undercoats on this figure, to test the colour combination. As he is a signifer, he would be dressed similar to the rank and file but with slightly fancier equipment to make him stand out in any battle.
