Gladly second the recommendation. Thanks for the heads up. Easily in my Top 5 War films and interchangeable with the other 4 for the #1 spot, depending on what my mood is that day.:wink2: -- Al

Just as a matter of interest, Paths of Glory precedes AQotWf at 8pm tonight. All Ouiet is then followed by The Big Parade @ 12:15am and Westfront 1918 @ 3am. It's a WW1 kind of evening on TCM. -- Al

I have seen Paths of Glory at least 15 times. Is that not one of the best movies of all time?
I remember as a 11 year old kid seeing it at the movies and likeing it. Now some 50 years later it is as good as ever.

It is a good one and based on the book of the same name, written by Humphrey Cobb. He based his novel on a true incident involving 3 corporals. The two French generals in the movie kind of steal the show. No wonder the French banned the movie for so long. -- Al

I just watched Paths of Glory again and picked up a few things I had not noticed before such as the Patton moment by the contemptible General and the shots of the trenches by Kubrick using a long lens. As usual Adolphe Menjou steals the show and after watching this movie you come away with the feeling that Samuel Johnson was right.

This movie, along with Dr. Strangelove, remain two of the best movies ever made.

It's odd the The Grand Illusion was not shown last night. One of the best movies ever, bar none. Von Stroheim is incredible as is Jean Gabin.

Hey Brad, Grand Illusion on TCM, Friday, July 18, @ 2am. -- Al

Thanks Al. I will watch it again. I also have to watch Westfront, a 1930 film. Have you seen it?

Brad

Hi Brad. Yes, I have seen Westfront 1918. At one point I had a VCR copy of the film. I liked it for what it was as a contemporary film to All Ouiet, although it is not as well drawn in terms of characters. It has been a long time since I last saw it and I would like to see a clean copy as the tape I has wasn't all that good. -- Al

It was on TCM last Friday in the wee hours and I taped it.
