Whilst we await the first truly worthwhile WW1 inspired film since Regeneration I wondered if it had escaped many a persons attention that we will have to wait a little longer!

All Quiet on the Western Front is being remade yet again with Paul Baumer being played this time by.....wait for it.....Harry Potter! As if John Boy hadn't been enough in '79!

When I saw it was being remade, I was at first quite excited by the thought of modern filming methods helping to create action scenes as dynamic as those we saw at the beginning of Saving Private Ryan. Then I saw Daniel Radcliffe had been cast in the main role and all hope of a decent war film evaporated in an instant.

Before anyone says he was good in My Boy Jack, I must disabuse you of this notion! He was Harry Potter in a uniform.

To be honest the 1930 film did the book great justice and is still a sparkling spectacle and that should have been that.

Ha, ha, ha, I believe you! Harry Potter in german WW1 uniform should be really funny... I appreciated the 79 movie, but you know.....Have you seen a decent movie remake in the last 10 years?? {sm2}

I enjoy both the original and the '79 remake, which was made for US television, if I'm not mistaken. I recall that it was broadcast by Hallmark, through their "Hallmark Hall of Fame" series. But I don't know that it needs to be remade yet again.

Prost!

I also enjoyed both versions and am a little suspect of a new remake, but I am willing to give it a chance as I am eager to see any movie that depicts WW1 in a realistic manner. As to the other versions, the original is one of my favorite movies, top 5 at least. It is well done in all aspects and it is made even better by it's being done so soon after the actual war, and especially because the early film techniques and the old black and white film lends it an almost 'real' atmoshere to a war that seems to be best translated in black and white film over color. The drab, colorness of BW just feels like WW1. That said, I liked the '79 remake just fine, and enjoyed the color aspect because it is one of the few times I have seen the French blue uniforms in color, on screen. Just don't know what another remake will improve on or add to. -- Al

Maybe folks confuse the John-Boy All Quiet with the John-Boy Red Badge. The 79 All Quiet was pretty good with Donald Pleasence as the teacher, Ernest Borgnine as Kat and Ian Holm as the postman/corporal. I remember that they used a town in then Czechoslavia, that was being demolished, for the location.

Hi All,

I managed to see the movie "Regeneration" mentioned on this thread. Good movie, albeit a little slow moving. It tells the tale of how mentally-damaged troops are nurtured, healed and sent back to the frontline. Jonathan Pryce who plays a very sympathetic doctor is very good here.
