All the Money in the World is a Ridley Scott movie about the kidnapping of John Paul Getty's grandson Paul in 1973. I remember those events. In case you plan to see the movie, I won't mention what happened (although you can read it online).

It's a fantastic movie, working both as a thriller and a portrait of Getty senior, one of the world's richest men and probably one of its most miserable. Christopher Plummer is superb as Getty. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't get an Academy Award nomination. His performance is brilliant and captivating. My son was incredulous when Getty says he wouldn't pay 1 cent in ransom because then his 14 other grandchildren would be kidnapped. Getty actually said that.

Plummer wasn't slated to be in the movie. The movie was supposed to star Kevin Spacey and had been completed when the allegations against him broke. Scott replaced him with Plummer. It's probably one of those lucky happenstances, considering his magnificent portrayal of Getty.

Brad...

I remember the story well...I was fascinated by it...

there is no spoiler unless they have changed the story...

casting Christopher Plummer seems like the better choice to me...
regardless of the Spacey allegations...
I would like to see this...

at first...
I thought he was heartless...
but I can somewhat rationalize his decision...
and why...
the outcome was surely not what he expected...

his grandson...
did he turn out well adjusted after this ordeal...
mentally I mean?

Mike, it’s actually a sad story. In 1981 he overdosed on drugs that led to a stroke and his being a quadriplegic, partially blind and unable to speak for the rest of his life. He died when he was 54.

Brad

I remember seeing pictures of his in his teens or early twenties...
he was living in France I think...
somewhere abroad...
he wore his hair longish to hide the sides of his face...
so sad...
I wonder if the drug abuse was a result of his trauma?

you know...
this is the stance most countries take now days...

we don't deal with terrorist...

but still...

his own grandson...

that must have made Getty a monster with his family...

Ha, I wasn't even around for another 5 years so it would be a spoiler to me :D I didn't know anything about it until I saw this post. I want to see this. Sounds like a fascinating story.

That’s why I didn’t say anything. It’s a fascinating movie.

Brad...

I just watched the trailer...

didn't know Mark Wahlberg was in it...

was not impressed with the trailer...

did you like the show...is it better than the trailer?

I just watched the trailer and the movie is much better than the trailer, not enough Plummer in the trailer or focus on Getty. That could possibly be due to having to reshoot part of the movie with Plummer instead of Spacey.

Saw it yesterday,

Man what a story...a sad one at that. Very intense and you gasp a couple of two-three times!

Highly recommend,

John from Texas

The movie hasn’t gotten off to a roaring start at the box office.
I think the theaters are just saturated right now. Anything outside the 18-35 demographic gets lost.
I haven't seen or planning on seeing. Plummer is always good.

Oops seems like I created a new thread when there already was one. Good to see the movie thread police on the ball. So will post here and other thread can be deleted as duplication.

Ended up seeing this due to timing rather than it being top of my list (was after Darkest Hour and Three Billboards).

Has attracted a lot of press as Director Ridley Scott re-shot the scenes that originally had Kevin Spacey in them. Christopher Plummer did a great job as Getty. A very interesting character to say the least. He notoriously said would not pay the ransom as would put his other grand kids in danger.

Made his money by being one of the first into Saudi Arabia for oil and was richest man in the world at time his grandson was kidnapped in Italy. There is a scene where mother of his son is in his UK mansion and wants to call Rome to check on progress with the police. The butler points her towards the red phone box (ie. street type) in reception area and has bags of coins. It is true he did install such a telephone box as many of his guests had been calling all over the world on his dime. In another scene he is doing his own laundry in his Rome hotel suite.

Whilst the story is interesting it is probably not one that needs to be seen in the cinema. Michelle Williams plays the mother but interesting to note mother does not even rate a Wiki entry. Mark Wahlberg plays a security type but has a fairly sedate role.

It does start off with an Inspired by true events tag and ends with a fairly good disclaimer about scenes and characters being changed for dramatic effect etc. There were quite a few things that I spotted that were obviously changed for such effect. Won't say what they are but for those who watch the movie you might want to have a quick look online to compare.
