Interesting article about Amazon in The Guardian today under headline Amazon: £7bn sales, no UK corporation tax.

Online retailer's British operation owned by company in Luxembourg which receives all payments for books, DVDs and other goods.

It also mentions state taxes in USA as Amazon currently only pays state taxes in 5 states.

So Amazon sells books cheaper in the UK and small businesses and shops suffer. Amazon pays no tax and the Govt does not get the tax the smaller competitors would have paid.

Customer gets books etc cheaper but as the competition gets less will Amazon raise their prices as the competition fades away ?

Not saying don't buy from Amazon but it is food for thought.

PS. However you do have to admire the determination of the guy who set up Amazon as I remember the stories about his early losses.

This is just crazy! I find the Book Depository a much cheaper option for most new books. Often I get the book, including postage cheaper than Amazon's cover price. The story beggars belief - isn't Britain in need of tax receipts - why would they allow someone off the hook like this?
