As I'm sure forum members will appreciate, obtaining books related to American history (or even in English) is rather difficult here in China. I did however find two books in an establishment I visited last night.
Its called; "Savage Wilderness" by someone going by the name of Harold Coyle. The blurb on the front cover says; "A Sweeping Saga of the French and Indian Wars" and on the back there's something about 1754 and someone called General Edward Braddock?. It also says on the back something like "Across the virgin fields, forests and frontiers, they discover courage amid the carnage, hope amid the horror, and a new world of freedom amid the beauty and mystery of a savage wilderness".
Sounds a bit flowery to me, but then again I'm not used to the style of American history writers. Would this be a good starting point for my desire to understand more of American history?
I left the other book alone. Something to do with Trolls and Wizards and a Fellowship, or some such.

Hi Harry,

Its a work of fiction. Coyle writes what is considered historical fiction similar to the Sharpes Series. I have not read this book but I am sure its a good yarn wrapped in the facts of the battles of the French and Indian War.

I hope this helps

Dave

Coyle's early books about a war with the Soviet Union were very well. I don't know about his attempt at historical fiction. He was an army officer, I think he was in Armour but it could be he was part of the "Queen of Battle", the Infantry:D

Yeah, I initially thought it was factual, but its historical fiction right enough. Just got past the first chapter which describes, of all things, the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Looks like its good HF though (i.e. don't think its a "bodice ripper"), and it'll keep me occupied and entertained for a couple of days while I wait to get my hands on my own books and DVD's.
Thanks to those who responded. :)
