Colonel Thomas Sumter took his Whigs on the offensive after the Battle of Huck's Defeat. While a diversionary attack on Hanging Rock took place, Sumter would go after the main objective, the fort/house at Rocky Mount commanded by Lt Colonel George Turnbull.

When the Whigs arrived early that morning, they immediately set upon a group of Loyalist militia that was just arriving. The gun shots set off the alarm at Rocky Mount. The Whigs attempted three charges of the large framed house, but were repulsed. The musket shot could not penetrate the extra layer of wood that was placed a foot behind the house walls the night before and filled with clay. The only effect they had on the defenders was by firing into the gun port holes at the enemy. Several Whigs died doing this.

A few hallowing attempts were made during the 8 hour battle to set the house on fire and just when they seemed successful, a large thunderstorm struck and rained out the flames. Colonel Thomas Sumter then withdrew his forces from the attack.

Due to the position I was in, I never got any good shots of the flaming wagon being pushed up to the side of the house.

There was fighting around/in the house, however, I did not get any good shots of it. Nor of the flaming wagon. They really did a great job on this.

The last are of the American forces withdrawing after the rain started that day.

That concludes all of the photos from yesterday that I am posting. I hope you enjoy.
