Hello,

Does anyone here know where one might look to find the rosters from the various regiments that served in the American Revolution? I didn't know if any of my British brethren could point me in the right direction.

My family came from England in 1788 to America. Since that time, our family has had several members serve in the military and in various wars. I would like to find out if that had been established before our arrival here.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Darrell

Hi Darrell,

A good place to begin if you're looking to research ancestors who may have served in the British armed forces would be the UK's National Archives. They're based in Kew, in London, but obviously enough, have a fairly extensive website that could be worth a try:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

As far as I'm aware, the National Archives are the principal repository for all documents and information relating to HM armed forces, so this would cover individual unit rosters, enlistment/discharge forms, military medical records, etc. . From my brief look at the website, the criteria for their military section runs from the 1760's onwards, so this would seem to include the period you're interested in.

Not sure how much information the site might be able to provide, but as I say, if nothing else, it's an excellent place to begin your research.

Good luck with the work, and keep us posted here on the Forum about any interesting military history nuggets you might plough up - always fascinating to see people finding out more about their past and ancestors!

Cheers,

Molloy.
